Australia's Breast Cancer Day
PINK RIBBON PROVIDES TOTAL BREAST CANCER CARE

The Cancer Council Australia is asking the community to proudly wear a pink ribbon in support of Australia's Breast Cancer Day (ABCD) on Monday 28 October, 2002.

In its ninth year, Australia's Breast Cancer Day continues to raise awareness of the disease that causes the most cancer deaths amongst Australian women. However, early detection has contributed to a decline in breast cancer mortality since 1994.

Chief Executive Officer of The Cancer Council Australia, Professor Alan Coates said, "Our member organisations are committed to funding extensive research to improve prevention. detection and treatment of breast cancer while offering the most comprehensive services available to support those living with the disease."

"In October, we ask that people buy a Cancer Council pink ribbon as an acknowledgment of the support and contribution of the special women in their lives and to assist us in providing a holistic approach to breast cancer care in Australia."

Women faced with the diagnosis of breast cancer can benefit from the special understanding and support offered by The Cancer Council's Breast Cancer Support Service. This unique program links women through their personal experience with breast cancer, giving them the opportunity to have one-to-one contact with a specially trained volunteer who has had a similar experience of breast cancer.

For the month of October, Cancer Council pink ribbon merchandise can be purchased from national supporting outlets: Best & Less, Bras 'n Things, Rockmans, Medicare, Miller's, Katies, 1626, Crossroads, Silhouette and Angus & Coote.

The Cancer Council Australia is Australia's peak national cancer control organisation. It brings together the eight state and territory community-based cancer councils in a joint commitment to preventing and controlling cancer in Australia. In working for women with breast cancer, The Cancer Council Australia cooperates closely with the National Breast Cancer Centre.
