THE world's biggest dance party and a fireworks spectacular are poised to make Melbourne Australia's New Year's Eve hub. Events giant ID&T, of Amsterdam, will hold a 10-hour New Year's Eve party for 45,000 revellers at Telstra Dome. The $3 million party, Sensation, is set to get official support from the City of Melbourne this week. Sensation director Duncan Stutterheim is also in talks with the Victorian Major Events Company.

"We are the world's biggest travelling club and we are reinventing New Year's Eve in Melbourne," Mr Stutterheim said. Sensation has held parties across Europe to crowds of up to 50,000 for the past eight years. "We want to grow this event. We want to make Melbourne a New Year's Eve destination," he said.  Sensation is expected to be made an official partner in the City of Melbourne's New Year's Eve 2008 plan and will align itself with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. A City of Melbourne spokesman said Sensation would enhance New Year's Eve celebrations in the city.

"Melbourne is the premier events and entertainment capital in Australia and stages some fantastic new year celebrations," he said. "Now it will play host to the only event of its kind in the southern hemisphere." But the spokesman said talks were continuing and no contract with Sensation had been signed. Sensation is overseen by Mr Stutterheim, his wife, Lisca, and a team of 20 people. The dance event will be on the same production scale as U2 tours and take five days to set up. The event will include a music, light and laser show, with live performers and DJs.

"This is not a rave. It is a cross between a pop concert, Cirque Du Soleil and a dance event," Lisca Stutterheim said. Those attending must wear white. In Europe, Sensation parties include a midnight fireworks spectacular and it is understood, pending permission, Mr Stutterheim proposes a significant fireworks display at the stadium. Tickets for Sensation will go on sale on July 24.

Sensation website:
Since the end of the last century, the Australian city with more savoir faire per square centimetre has delivered some seriously superior occasions that have made the world sit up and take notice. If there was a moment missing from the Melbourne calendar however, it was a serious NYE celebration. Missing no more. Melbourne is to host Australia's first Sensation Event on December 31, 2008. The Telstra Dome, the biggest covered venue in the Southern Hemisphere, will play venue to a glamorous, atmospheric and evocative evening of music, dance, theatre and glamour to rival the world's biggest and best New Year events.

For an incredible ten hours, dancers, acrobats, amazing lighting shows, stadium-scaled sets and props and a spectacular pyrotechnic component will contribute to the celebratory style of the occasion and wrap Australia's New Year revellers in the Sensation vibe. Renowned across Europe as the world's finest dance exponents, Dutch-based ID&T, the company behind Sensation have perfected an approach to large-scale party events that takes them into the next level. Sensation is all about positivity, theatre, glamour and sophistication; the place to escape the everyday for people with open minds and healthy attitudes.

Sensation has identified Melbourne as the right place to kick off their southern expansion because Melbourne understand events. And it understands style. In addition, there is a strong understanding of dance culture in the city. Sensation believes Australia's most European city is a perfect fit. "What I really like about Melbourne is the city feel," says Sensation director, Duncan Stutterheim. "We want to grow something and in Melbourne you can do that because the community is more connected. It's a fashionable city and we do like people to get dressed up. It really meets a lot of criteria. Melbourne is also a very dance-literate city."

Hundreds of thousands of discerning Europeans have been getting the Sensation experience for the better part of a decade. Sensation is not just dance. To pigeonhole it as such would be to dramatically underestimate it. Like an exotic holiday at a luxury resort, Sensation is a place for anyone seeking a joyous and beautiful escape from everyday life. This is a theatrical and glamorous event that owes more to the grand mask balls of Europe than to the doof-doof parties of England.

This is a club kind of event with a mix of local and international DJs and the party created by the environment of fantasy and beauty. A place for anyone who loves la dolce vita, from urban professionals to young artists, Sensation mixes uplifting music with performers and props and decor inspired by whimsy and opulence.

Sensation ticket holders will be able to book tables, corporate boxes and even dinner on site, creating an atmosphere of a grand ball with a modern party twist. Sensation will be the place to be in Melbourne on New Year's Eve. "People can just walk to the Telstra Dome from the city. It's the biggest covered arena of its kind. Melbourne is aiming to be the events city of the world. Our decision to hold Sensation there makes a lot of sense," says Stutterheim. Thousands of Australia's and for sure, the world's savviest party goers are expected to make their way to Sensation Melbourne '08.
