There is no point denying that without the internet we would be lost. You wouldn’t be able to read all the awesome articles on this site for free, there would be no Facebook to stalk your friends on, to do research for school work you would have to go to a library, and instead of emailing each other we’d still be writing letters.

But the Internet can be a scary place, with things like viruses and spy-ware floating around, you never know when or if your computer is under attack! But all you need is a little knowledge and caution and you should be well on your way to protecting your computer from viruses.

The Youth Olympics

From the 14th to the 26th of August the first-ever Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore. The thought behind the Games is that it will inspire young people around the world to participate in sport and adopt and live by the Olympic values. An amazing 3,600 gifted young athletes will gather from around the world to compete in their chosen sport.

It is expected the Australian Youth Olympic Team will have 100 athletes, 70 individual athletes and 30 athletes in two team sports – women’s handball and men’s hockey. This is an exciting opportunity for all young people world-wide. Not only is it an international competition, but it is similar to the Olympic Games, which holds prestige and merit. Anyone who wants to pursue their sports career further will want to compete in the Youth Olympics and as Australians we want to cheer them on!

I feel like I am forever sharing horror stories and information about Being Safe Online, my last blog (read it here) scared me enough not to write “hitting up the gym… woop watch the fat fall off” ever again… Yet, once again I have been shocked into thinking about what I post as my status, this time, in regards to cash!

MyRate.com.au has recently warned Australians to be extra careful when posting a status on social networking sites. We don’t often think twice about what we are posting, but now we need to think that everything we say online will impact our entire lives, now and in the future.

Being Safe Online

Are you one of those people who have over 300 Facebook friends, upload countless photos of nights out, holidays, and proud cooking creations for the world to see? Do you list where you work, where you’re going Saturday night and happily allow anyone to become your new online friend? Or is your profile so ultra private that not even Facebook is sure you exist?

Well, neither of the two are the optimal choice for playing it safe online. It’s all about finding the middle between letting people see and know what you’re up to and keeping specific things about yourself and those close to you private.

My First Period

We have a lot of ‘my firsts’ throughout our life, first days, first rooms, first kisses and our first period. Often before you have your first period you’ll know what to expect and what happens when a female menstruates. Either way, it is still always going to be a shock.

Females experience a week, or five days, of menstruating or blood loss every month. The blood will be thicker and heavier at the beginning. Menstruating happens every month as the lining of the uterus thickens and then releases an egg, which can be fertilised by sperm, if this happens a women will become pregnant. If this egg is not fertilised, the body realises this is not needed, and the lining is lost, through a period.

$11 Millon to make Office Buildings Greener

The Rudd Government initiative, Green Building Fund, has contributed $11.6 million to make 30 office buildings ‘greener’. This initiative plans to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions with the government assisting building owners to make their commercial officers greener.

A North Sydney an office building will install five vertical wind turbines as part of the Going Green program; 29 other Australian buildings will generate energy in-office too.

Environment Attitudes Split Generations

Neco, is Melbourne’s eco superstore, their ‘Dirty Money’ research study has found that Generation Y’s are more likely to believe that humankind are responsible for global warming whilst the Baby Boomers clearly pronounce that there is not enough being done to create a greener working industry.

Generation Y (aged between 17 and 28 years old) are one of the most influential generation groups since the Baby Boomers. Generation Y’s have been brought up surrounded by mobile phones, rap music, the Internet, terrorism and reality TV.

The Dirty Money survey was collated from 1800 general consumers responses and shows a clear difference between Generation Y and the Baby Boomers attitudes.

A new survey has shown that kids and their parents are using Facebook, together; however 24% of parents say that the Internet has made their children lazy.

Parents claim that they are using social networking sites so they are aware of the advancements and have the ability to actively involve their family in the social communication world. An Optus survey has shown that women spend double the time using social networking sites than their male counterpart. Whilst, 30% of 10-17 year olds are twice are likely to use the Internet for social networking than homework.

Solariums and Skin Cancer

The SunSmart website states that Australia, the 'sunburnt country' has one of the “highest rates of skin cancer in the world” with at least two in three Australians being diagnosed with a form of skin cancer by the age of 70. In one day “over 1,000 Australians are treated for skin cancer and over 1,700 Australians die from skin cancer each year”- SunSmart Austraia. The major cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is from the sun and other UV exposure such as solariums. Skin cancer is one of the easily preventable skin cancers in Australia and if detected and treated early can be cured.

34 year old father of three, Jay Allen knows there is a 65% chance that his Melanoma could return within the next five years. Every three months Jay is to have chest x-rays and blood tests to see if the cancer has returned.

As the annual Schoolies celebrations kick off around Australia DrinkWise Australia wants to warn parents of schoolies that their last minute attempts to curb teen drinking will not work…

Trish Worth of DrinkWise says that “the eve of Schoolies is not the time to be talking to your teenager about alcohol in the first instance; children learn how to drink long before they’ve had their first drink by observing their parents. Parental role modelling is the number one influence on children’s future behaviours and attitudes towards drinking. If we expect them to exercise control during Schoolies’ celebrations, we need to lead by example and establish expectations well in advance.”
