Secondary School Teacher

  1. Name
    Ms Ursula M. Borg

  2. Age
    25 (aahhh!) years old

  3. Job Title
    Secondary School Teacher

  4. Job Description
Teaching English, Drama and anything else that comes up. Going to meetings and camps, excursions, meeting with parents, yard duty, supervising detentions, sporting events and other extracurricular activities.

  5. Hours (per week)
Officially? 8.30 - 4.00pm Monday - Friday. Reality? Anywhere up to and beyond 50-60 hours per week.

  6. What was your first job?
My first job was working in a smorgasboard restaurant to help get me through university. My first teaching job was at a co-educational catholic college. I am still here!

  7. What inspired you to choose the particular career you're working in now?
I love to learn and I love being around people. I was sure that there had to be a way to make the school experience even more enjoyable. I wanted great memories for the students that I teach as well as a firm grasp of the skills they will need in order to be successful once their formal education is complete.

  8. What qualifications are needed to work in this field?
I have a Bachelor of Arts (English/History Major) degree and then completed a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). At least four years of study is required in order to become a teacher.

  9. What are the best aspects about your job?
The holidays! Also days when you can make someone understand something they previously found difficult. Days when you laugh a lot. Knowing that you are changing the world. Going to work every day and knowing that you will be facing different challenges, exciting developments and learning something new and wonderful. Being inspired.

  10. What are the worst aspects?
The money, the stress (it's not a job you leave and don't think about at home), homework and corrections. I also don't like having to be disciplinarian and punishing students. That is particularly difficult sometimes.

  11. How many years' experience do you have in this field?
I have just completed my second year in teaching.

  12. Are there many employment opportunities?
There is a shortage of teachers at the moment, particularly in the areas of IT, Maths and the Sciences. Opportunities to travel as a teacher are enormous and Australian teachers are in great demand in both the UK and New Zealand.

  13. Other related careers:
You could complete further study to become a careers counsellor, adult educator, business educator and the skills you develop as a teacher are often greatly respected in the business world, especially in human resources and public relations.
