Interview with Luigi Masi
Interview with Luigi Masi
Luigi Masi doesn’t fit with your conventional pop star, he was born of an Italian father and Danish mother in Brazil and raised in London, showing he has been impacted by a range of musical influences which feature on his debut album Uncool.
Luigi Masi was passionate about music from an early age, playing the violin and piano whilst still be a key figure in the school choir. Even though he was interested in music he didn’t think it would lead him to a career as a pop artist.
Luigi has produced his pop album Uncool and explains it as an album of rock, dance, R&B and a mixture of pop, he just wants people to want to dance and be happy. He has toured with the Sugababes and Girls Aloud, although he describes this experience as scary he did love it!
How does it feel to perform on stage?
Luigi Masi:Performing live is just the most exciting thing for me as an artist. Being up on stage, no matter what size, and feeling the crowd is just amazing. It's even better when I'm doing it in front of my own fans who know the lyrics to my songs and singalong with me!
How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?
Luigi Masi: It was so crazy, I first heard my single "Strobelight" whilst in a car and I went so crazy that we nearly crashed. It's just so great that all the hard work that I have poured into my songs is being paid off. I still get goosebumps when I hear it or see the video on TV.
What is different about touring Australia?
Luigi Masi:The crowds are crazy! They're really appreciative of people like me coming over on such a long journey from the UK as other artists I've talked too similarly say the same thing. Also everybody has an Aussie accent which I just love. When I was younger I had a best friend who was Australian and she was just staying at my school for a year, I had picked up her accent by the end of the year, it was so cool!
Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?
Luigi Masi:Yes, I have written and co-written tens of songs but only around 6 made my album. Writing is just such a calming experience, drawing from my life experiences and also from everything I've heard and seen happen from other people - I'm just inspired by life and living every day by day.
Describe your style of music?
Luigi Masi: It's pop music but with bits of everything. Essentially it's a party album, there are no slow songs on it. I went through many sounds whilst exploring what MY sound was and in the end just saw it wasn't specific to one genre, it's a mish-mash of all the music I love.
Whose music do you admire most?
Luigi Masi:I really like all Ryan Tedders (from OneRepublics) work. He's one of my favourite producers. His songs for Beyonce, Leona Lewis and himself are awesome. He always makes his songs so dramatic and intense and you just know that when the chorus comes that it's gonna soar!
What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
Luigi Masi:Beyonces and Pussycat Dolls latest albums are amazing. I'm even down to a bit of guilty listening with the High School Musical 3 soundtrack. I like my British pop too with Girls Aloud and Sugababes. But really just anything pop/r&b/rock/dance...
Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Luigi Masi:They're both really important to me as an artist. I can't perform live without having my material from recording. So whilst I'm recording that is my favourite thing to do, but once it's done, I just can't wait to get our and perform my new stuff.
What has been your favorite part of becoming a music artist?
Luigi Masi:Just meeting so many amazing people. I would never have dreamed that I could come this far at such a young age really. I toured with Sugababes and Girls Aloud who are like my favourite bands here in the UK so that was such an honour for me. Also working with all the producers on my record around the world, that's been such an experience and taught me so much about life and how to be an artist.
What do you do to relax?
Luigi Masi:It's really easy for me as being an artist is my job. So when I'm not performing or doing related work I can just switch off and be me. Hangout at home watching TV, playing games, going out with my friends. I'm just a normal 18 year old!
One rule you live by?
Luigi Masi: My motto is "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself" and I fully live by that. You're not going to be remembered in history just by sitting and doing nothing. You have to go out and create your future.
