Interview with Jessica Sutta

Question: What have you been up to since The Pussycat Dolls split?

Jessica Sutta: I have been on a an incredible and exciting journey of self discovery which has begun to reflect in my artistry. After the Dolls split I took some time off and then put out Dance songs or featured on other DJ's EDM and Dance records which did pretty well. I have had three number 1's on the Billboard Dance Chart but now i'm really ready to take my music to the next level.

Question: What was it like working with Dave Aude for Gonna Get U?

Jessica Sutta: Dave is amazing to work with. He knows my voice so well and is an amazing producer and vocal producer too. He always brings out the best in me and I think of him as a mentor who has really contributed to my growth and confidence as an artist. I was so thrilled that we got to #1 with the song!

Question: We love the Gonna Get U video clip, what was it like filming it?

Jessica Sutta: It was really fun and relaxed. Stress free. It was simple and we shot it with a small crew so it was super friendly and we all laughed a lot and just really enjoyed filming it.

Question: How does it feel to hear your songs played all over the airwaves?

Jessica Sutta: It is a great feeling. I have worked so hard to get my voice to where it is and continue to strive to be the very best that I can be...so when I hear myself on radio it does validate all of the hard work that has gone into it. What is even cooler though is when I pull up randomly to another car and they have their windows lowered with the music blaring and I realize they are playing my song!!

Question: What was the motivation behind the track Bottle Bitch?

Jessica Sutta: My producer, S-X was making a track at my house and I really loved it so Mams Taylor who manages both of us and I, jokingly, started to freestyle to it and we came up with the hook "Bottle Bitch". It was so much fun to rap and do something that no one has ever heard me do before so we just went with it. It's not going to be on my album but it's one of my favorite songs to perform at live shows. The song itself calls out all "Bottle Bitches" both male and female. It pokes fun at any of those sneaky, manipulative, gold digging, opportunists with no self respect and a loose set of morals but it does so in kind of a funny way.

Question: What can you share with us about Feline Resurrection?

Jessica Sutta: It is going to be different to anything anyone has heard from me in the past. It has more emotional depth and multiple layers. I express pain, love, abandonment, fears, sexuality, excitement, hope and every emotion in between. Ultimately, the underlying theme is self love and the process and journey one goes through, often times to get there. There is something for every mood but musically it is consistent. I want it to connect and inspire and resonate with peoples hearts and minds.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Jessica Sutta: I have become far more active with song writing recently. For me it is totally a confidence thing. I am starting to take risks and not care about what people think of me as much as I care what I think of me and that has given me a tremendous sense of freedom as an artist. I am not trying to be calculating. I am just lucky enough to love what I do and do what I love! On Feline Resurrection I am proud to say I have written or co-written a good amount of lyrics and melodies. I am inspired by truth, love, other artists, pain, my doggies, Sex and The City....you name it. If you are open, I believe anything can be a beautiful source of inspiration.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Jessica Sutta: My iPod has Multiple Personality Disorder! I really have a diverse library of music. Right now I am listening to The Magician, Old school MJ, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Madonna, and The Clash!

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Jessica Sutta: I am focusing on next months release of "Let It Be Love" Featuring the extremely talented Rico Love. This will be my first single from my debut album "Feline Resurrection"

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Jessica Sutta: No. There were many moments, probably daily. This is an unrelentingly cruel and difficult business to succeed in. Especially if you are not willing to compromise your moral code, which I never have and never will.

The more I started to get to know and love myself the less frequently I would have those thoughts. Practice makes perfect. I have the eye of the tiger now as my manager always tells me. I am determined and work my butt off and never give myself room for excuses or doubt. I am very passionate about what I do and most importantly really have so much fun doing it.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Jessica Sutta: I love both but nothing compares to live performance. It is where I feel most at home. It's where I connect mostly to the magic of truly being present.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Jessica Sutta: Of course I was inspired and still am, by artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson but something inside of me just always knew that I was going to be a performer. It's the only thing that felt 100% right for me. So I don't think it was one particular thing but rather a diverse collection of influential factors but mostly what felt right in my heart that inspired me!

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Jessica Sutta: There are constant challenges in this business. It's all relative though. Whatever challenge I go through in the moment, at the time seems like the toughest or most important, then I might look back on it as if it were no big deal. The reality is challenges are there so we can learn about ourselves and grow. On the surface there could be lots of different challenges but what helps me is not to micro manage but rather to think about the underlying reason for any potential blockages. When we can remind ourselves that our problems do not define who we are and don't allow them to become bigger than us then they tend to fall into perspective and become more manageable. So my point is that I could be specific about the challenges I have had or may have but that is when I am in danger of getting stuck in my own head about it. I focus on the potential solutions rather than the challenges themselves. To succeed as an artist you have to grow very thick skin and not subscribe to a victim mentality. I believe that hard work, talent and faith can open even the doors with the biggest locks!

Question: What's a typical day like?

Jessica Sutta: I can't say I have a typical day. Scheduling dictates a lot of what I do but I would say that more often than not I try to ensure that I get to meditate, do yoga or Pilates, run on the treadmill whilst singing my songs (Not for vanity but for practice!), walk my doggies, hike, read, listen to music, cook, do vocal warm ups and of course watch Family Guy and some kind of Housewives reality TV show.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Jessica Sutta: Performing live on stage and getting to connect and exchange energies and love with my fans. Also getting to inspire or put a smile on peoples faces and to be able to make a difference no matter how big or small...that's really what life is about!

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Jessica Sutta: So hard to pick just one!! I'll go with Madonna. She is an amazing artist that has made an incredible impact on pop culture as a whole. I admire her a lot.

Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?

Jessica Sutta: Visit me and talk to me on all the usual sites: facebook.com/jessicasutta twitter.com/iamjessicasutta instagram.com/jessicasutta

Question: What message would you like your music to say to your fans?

Jessica Sutta: I would like it to touch them, inspire feelings, inspire truth, inspire love, get them to relate and reflect and connect with the universal energy of love that dwells within each and everyone of our cores.
