What are my options if I want a more natural childbirth setting?

What are my options if I want a more natural childbirth setting? If you are not fond of hospitals, but don't like the idea of delivering at home either, what are your options for a more natural childbirth setting?

Delivering in a childbirth centre.
These centres are non-hospital facilities, and are operated by certified nurses (midwives). If you deliver at a birth centre, you can expect family centred care, no routine interventions, plus the ability to have lots of input about what goes on during your birth. Another advantage is there are no rules on who you can have present for your labour and delivery. You will be able to walk around during labour, eat and drink, and deliver in any position that you would like. You generally return home about 12 hours after delivery.

Be sure to ask:
  1. Are the birth attendants/midwives licensed healthcare providers?
  2. Is the birth centre accredited?
  3. What are the arrangements for care if complications arise that require referral to an obstetrician or admission to a hospital?
  4. What do the charges for birthing centre care, what do they cover, and will your insurance plan pay for these services?

Women who want to deliver at birthing centres should be screened carefully and determined to be free of medical problems and be a low risk for the development of obstetrical or medical complications.
Consider interviewing midwives. Are you comfortable with their care approach to pregnancy and childbirth?

There are many midwifery practices that can help provide you with a non-hospital atmosphere even within the hospital.

Research the centre and options thoroughly so you can make an informed choice.
