Origins Launches Global Earth Initiative

Origins, a brand committed to creating high-performance natural skincare that is powered by nature and proven by science furthers its long-standing commitment to protect the planet, its resources and all those who populate it. Starting Earth Month 2009, Origins is expanding this mission with the Origins Earth Initiative. Origins will aid reforestation projects globally helping to plant thousands of trees around the world for the benefit of the people and the planet. The initiative will kick-off with an in-store and promotion. Beginning in April, for every Origins A Perfect World Antioxidant moisturizer with White Tea sold, Origins will purchase a tree to be planted.

"Origins daily dedication to the environment is reaffirmed by its earth and animal friendly practices, packaging and policies." Origins manufactures using a combination of renewable resources, wind energy and earth-friendly practices. And Origins uses recycled materials wherever possible. As a result, Origins has already planted the equivalent to 1.25 million trees.

With the new Origins "Return to Nature" Earth Initiative and global reforestation project, Origins is partnering with Greening Australia to support the delivery of critically important environmental works. In the brands' homeland of North America, Origins will partner with American Forests Global Releaf Program. As a brand sold in over 30 countries and territories, countries where Origins is sold will choose a local charity that best suits their region. The local tree planting organizations will help to further sustain our global mission.

To advance this goal, future global in-store events and promotions will take place throughout the year which will support reforestation initiatives. "Origins will continue to support these global and local charities in an effort to help build a cleaner, healthier environment," said Lauder. When a new Origins guide is hired, a tree will be planted in their name. Additionally, when a new Origins store opens, trees will be planted in its honor as well.

The Power of Tree Planting
There are numerous reasons for the Origins Brand to launch its tree planting initiative. Some of the most commanding are as follows:
* Just one tree absorbs more than a ton of carbon over its lifetime according to The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. One tree absorbs about 18 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.
* One tree provides oxygen for up to four people in one day.
* A canopy of trees in an urban environment can slash smog levels up to 6%.
* One tree reduces heating and cooling costs on a typical home by up to 12%.
* Planting one tree has the net cooling effect on the environment to ten air conditioners operating at 20 hours per day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
* From one tree we can obtain approximately 8,335 sheets of standard business paper.

Disposable bags, especially plastic bags, are known to damage the environment, particularly marine life. Origins understands the importance of reusable shopping bags to replace wasteful plastic bags. During Earth Month, Origins is offering customers an enviro bag with every purchase.

Planet-Friendly Since 1990
Since its inception, beginning with its iconic double-tree logo, Origins commitment to the planet and people who populate it began when the brand was born in 1990. Origins believes that reducing pollution means increasing efficiency and wasting fewer resources. All of our printed materials are printed on recycled paper using soy-based inks. Cartons are made from 50% Forest Stewardship Council certified paperboard and 50% post-consumer recycled fiber. These paperboards and cartons are manufactured using wind power or hydro power, both renewable energy resources.

Origins manufacturing facilities have instituted Environmental Management Systems that comply with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). They are designed to improve its environmental performance and avoid or reduce adverse environmental impacts over time.

Taking this dedication one step further, Origins continues its partnership with Community Energy Inc. USA to purchase wind generated power to offset electricity used by its US retail stores, manufacture of Origins products in company-owned facilities, and third parties manufacturing the Origins Organics™ collection. Wind energy is a natural, inexhaustible source of energy that requires no fuel and produces no pollution. By purchasing wind power for the US retail stores, Origins will use less grid electricity and achieve a carbon dioxide deduction.

And by helping to fund the building of additional turbines with Community Energy Inc. USA to supply electricity to Origins manufacturing operations, Origins will achieve an additional reduction in CO2 emissions. These reductions culminate in the equivalent of 1.25 million trees planted.

Additionally, Origins has been recognized as one of the top 20 retail partners by the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership as a result of its purchasing of 100 percent green power.
