P-Money is regarded as one of New Zealand’s best DJ's rocking clubs all
over the world, previously taking 3rd place at the prestigious ‘Technics
DMC World DJ Championships.’ His 8 year career has seen him spin
alongside the world’s finest DJ's: Roc Raida, The X-Ecutioners, DJ
Craze, A-Trak, Mix Master Mike, DJ Revolution and open up for the likes
of: 50 Cent, Xzibit, The Roots, KRS ONE and Public Enemy to name a
few.
Tell me a bit about Angels?
P-Money:I just finished it and it was fun. Whilst I was making
the video it evolved into kind of a movie trailer, that sort of idea and
from there it evolved into a film. It was a process putting it
together.
How did it come together?
P-Money:It is a result of what I do. I was in the studio seeing
what works. I began with the laugh, that you can hear in the track, and
placed that with the drum rolls and worked with it. I wasn’t very
confident but my friend Even heard it and said “Dude that sounds cool!”
I gained some confidence with the track then and I got my mate Julia to
sing and we finished it.
How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?
P-Money:So great. At the start you don’t have much and it
evolves into bigger and better things. I am so proud.
Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?
P-Money:Not really. I started out in the industry pretty early.
I knew what I wanted; I wanted to be a DJ. As a teen I was doing all I
could to practice and get out there and as I got older it happened. I
got better and better gigs.
What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
P-Money:I am actually listening to a lot of older music at the
moment. I have Stevie Wonder in my car and I’ve had it in my car for all
of January, I really like it. I also have Diddy’s album, I think because
there is a movie out at the moment, celebrating his life.
What are you looking forward to most about the Good Vibrations
festivals?
P-Money:I want to see the size of the crowd! I hear you have
huge crowds. The lineup is really up my alley, all the artists are
hip-hop and dance which I love! I am also looking forward to seeing
Q-Tip. I have been a fan of his since I was a teen.
How do you feel when you watch yourself of the big screen?
P-Money:Yeah its cool! It’s fun I’m keen doing it. I made my
first video back when I was the member of a band; I was the DJ in the
band. We made our first video clip for the first time in 2000. It still
feels like it felt the first time, so good and very exciting!
Was there a moment when you knew you had made it in regards to your
track Everything?
P-Money:There actually was. I know there was. The track went
through many stages and took a while to develop because there were to
writers. Two different people wrote the chorus and verse. I went through
a few writers and when I found the right one, I knew I had made it. It
was really good and as a DJ I knew it worked. I sent it to a few of my
DJ friends and they said “Dude this is really good, I didn’t know you
could do something this cool!”
What inspires you?
P-Money:Usually other music, if somebody puts out new music, if
it’s good and exciting I normally want to do something just as fresh and
exciting. Or I want to better that. If I don’t hear anything good my
music normally slows down for a bit.
