Interview with Lauren Kate

Question: What inspired you to write the Fallen series?

Lauren Kate: Originally the idea came from a line straight out of Genesis. I was in Graduate School and I was taking a class were we were reading the Bible of Literature and there is a mention of Angels who looked down from heaven and saw mortal woman and though they were beautiful; eventually they were kicked out of heaven because they put their lust before their adoration of God. I thought that was a very interesting seed for a love story because the angel would have had to sacrifice so much for that love, which meant it had to be a very important and very profound. I began thinking who the girl would be and why he would have fallen for her.

Question: Did you ever imagine the series would be so successful?

Lauren Kate: Oh no! Not at allÂ… I had written two novels before Fallen that I had tried to get published that I had received many rejection letters for. I had also written another novel that was about to be published, but it was going to be a very small and quiet publication. I think when you're writing alone, it is isolating and you feel very distant from your readers - before you have readers and you can't imagine that you ever will. Everything from Random House first buying the book to finding myself in Australia a few years later talking about the series; it is really remarkable.

Question: How did you go about creating the character of Lucinda?

Lauren Kate: I started from the line in Genesis, knowing that there had to be something very unique about her. I started with thinking where I wanted her to be at the end of the series and I then backtracked to where I knew she had to begin in order to be accessible for my teenage readers.

I wouldn't say Lucinda and I have much in common but she starts out just like someone I can relate too, a character that I would be friends with, in real life. Lucinda grows over the course of the series, in each book, until she reaches the point where I have been trying to get her to, all this time, in Rapture. Even in Passion I think she is getting close to the type of person that she really wants to be but she has had to go through quite a lot to get there.

Question: Which character was more fun to develop? Daniel or Cam?

Lauren Kate: Cam was much easier! Cam basically wrote himself, he is actually based on my husband. I had a really good time with Cam and fell in love with him, he was suppose to be the bad guy but you tend to like him too much so his role in the series had to change a lot. The bad guys are often the most interesting but Cam takes over, he wants to have a bigger role in the series.

Daniel was very challenging, for me, in the beginning, partly because like Luce, I knew where he was going to end up; but I could only share so much of his character with Luce and the reader in the first couple of books. Daniel is quite mysterious and he can be quite difficult but I actually loved the person that Daniel has turned into in Passion as well. I think Passion, because it is told in alternating chapters, really gives Daniel a voice, the voice he has been lacking in the first couple of books. I began to see how worth it he is, in Passion.

Question: How many more books do you plan to write for the Fallen series?

Lauren Kate: There will be one more book, after Passion, it is called Rapture. Rapture is the conclusion to Luce and Daniel's story.
