Shannan Ponton's Top Ten Tips for Getting Undies Run Ready

Ambassador and celebrity trainer of TBL Families, Shannan Ponton, is getting pumped for the 2016 People's Choice Undies Run for Bowel Cancer and is giving his fellow Undies Run-ners some hot tips to be in fine running form ahead of the event on Sunday 17 January.

According to Shannan, it's all about getting your head right, hardening up, good nutrition and training – not complaining.

1. 'Take responsibility of where you are in that moment. You deserve the right to feel comfortable in your skin, but if you want change, you must commit to yourself and set about achieving your goals."
2. 'We're all busy, we all face demands from bosses, family and partners and we get tired and sore. But if you want to change, take control of your life. Make the time for training and eating well every day and stop playing the blame game – your behaviour is nobody's fault but yours."
3. 'Realise and accept that you will have to make sacrifices to achieve fitness and weight loss goals. It may be losing an hour's sleep to train or missing out on a junk food binge with friends, but small sacrifices are always worth it when you achieve your goal."
4. 'Set short and long term achievable goals. Success breeds success, and the more you achieve the easier it becomes to stay motivated. Goals should be challenging, but realistic. For example, a shortterm goal might be to run the 1.7km Undies Run circuit without stopping, and a long term goal might be 10kms without stopping."
5. 'Eat less processed food like white bread, muffins, sugary cereals and biscuits. Always choose low fat dairy, lean meat cuts and use minimal oils and fats in cooking. Reduce your sugar intake by cutting back on lollies and soft drinks and instead plan a diet that's higher in protein like lean red meat, fish, chicken and turkey."
6. 'Don't stray from your regime on the weekends. Eating and training well all week will be cancelled by a -gloves off, eat what you want on the weekends' approach! Sorry it just doesn't work."
7. 'Record EXACTLY what goes into your mouth. Many people suffer from what I call -calorie amnesia.' But if it goes in, it counts – the ice cream on the lid, what you pinch from your partner's plate, and the crusts from the kids' sandwiches. Unfortunately; contrary to popular belief; there are no caloriefree foods."
8. 'Find a physical activity you enjoy, so you'll stick to your fitness goals! I know it sounds obvious, but if you like something you are far more likely to keep it up – try dancing, boxing, body attack, cycling, team sports, walking the dog, tennis, aerobics, cardio, weight lifting, cross fit, skating, skipping, martial arts or surfing - there is something for everyone."
9. 'Aim to burn 600 calories every day, six days a week, through exercise – that's about 30 minutes of vigorous cardio. Use a heart rate monitor to calculate your personal calorie burn, but generally, the harder you go the faster you'll reach your goal.
10. 'Remember to always include some resistance training in your program. It improves bone health, stimulates metabolism and helps achieve a toned, athletic and strong physique – perfect for being seen by thousands in your undies."

Shannan's final piece of advice is to train with a mate, and to bring as many buddies along to the Undies Run as you can!
