ASCA - Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse
ASCA (Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse) is a national organization of survivors supporting other survivors. - ASCA’s door is open to anyone (over 18) who feels they have suffered abuse - physical, emotional, sexual or spiritual
Through our support network - online, phone and face-to-face, monthly newsletter, 1300 information line (1300 657 380), and counselor-facilitated programs/workshops/awareness events and website www.asca.org.au, ASCA helps to break down the sense of isolation, alienation many survivors feel, validates and encourages trust. We have a number of psychologists/counselors who help us in our work.
The incidence of substantiated cases of child abuse continues to rise. Society is beginning to acknowledge the problem of child abuse but largely ignores its legacy. ASCA’s vision is to see a world without child abuse - that is our dream. In the meantime we are working to minimize the pain caused to victims - the impact can last a lifetime. The impact on everyone is different and includes low self-esteem, relationship breakdown, welfare dependency, mental illness, chronic physical ills, depression/anxiety, criminality, substance abuse. The list is a litany of social ills, of which the cost to the individual and to society is enormous.
ASCA is endeavouring to break down the stigma which surrounds child abuse, just as the stigma around mental illness/depression is being broken down. In our community there are hundreds of thousands of victims, many of who are afraid to admit what’s happened.
