The Cultural Centre initiative of the German International School Sydney

The German International School Sydney will be opening its doors and the minds of guests who attend the upcoming Creativity discussion hosted by the school's Cultural Centre, on Tuesday April 1st 2014 at 7pm.  The free event poses the unique opportunity for learning new techniques of unlocking one's creativity as well as open panel discussions on the different executions of creativity within society.

The Cultural Centre initiative of the German International School Sydney aims to provide a meeting place for open discussion, as well as exposure to a varied cultural calendar for the local community.  The social backbone of the initiative hopes to make the German International School Sydney considered a hub for activities that bring together all walks of life.  Those open to the notion of experiential learning, making new acquaintances and challenging thought processes are encouraged to attend.  Whether a celebration of the arts, music or sporting event, or even a debate on a current topic, the Cultural Centre is a gateway to furthering the mind in a public and community led manner.

While we often hear about the need for creativity to help us tackle the major challenges we face in the 21st century, we rarely hear about the practical steps we can take to build creativity in ourselves and our workplaces.  Creativity is quintessential to human existence and is accessible by all, yet often is not actualised as a part of daily life.  Whether it be through improvisation, invention or exploration, creativity occurs in the mundane and celebrated mediums of everyday life.  Contrary to popular belief, creativity can be taught and learnt.  As an essential skill for not only children but people in all walks of life, creativity is an open topic of discussion that must be utilised in both work related and social related circumstances.

The German International School Sydney's Cultural Centre will host an open panel discussion on Creativity, discussing the notions of unlocking creativity as well as the different mediums creativity can be executed.  The panel will be led by practicing artist, Sarah Robson, who will deliver the initial Creativity introduction and present five special guest speakers including Lyle Chan, Helen Manger Hofhuis, Gitte Weise, Prue Robson and Katherine Roberts.  Each speaker comes from a different creative career path, applying varied opinion and experience to the discussion of creativity, due to the unique career trajectories each has undergone.

Kicking off the night will be Helene Manger Hofhuis, an Art Historian, a regular participant and contributor to the internationally acclaimed annual European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht; she specialises in 17th-19th century European paintings and furniture studies, with a rich understanding of the history of Art.  Prue Robson is an experienced management consultant with expertise in creativity, innovation and change; Prue has a background in marketing management but now finds herself researching creativity techniques to tackle organisational issues as well as to develop new ideas for societal benefits.  As artistic director of Artology - a creative and performing arts program for high school students across NSW, Lyle Chan develops the creative potential of young people through experiential learning in the arts.  Gitte Weise is the Gallery Director of the Gitte Weise Gallery Sydney / Berlin, having a degree in psychology and postgraduate Masters in Gallery management, her European art focused background catapulted her to the successful researcher she is today.  While Katherine Roberts holds a Master of Arts (Admin) from COFA UNSW and Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University and is currently Senior Curator at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum where she develops and manages exhibitions with associated public and education programs.

Each speaker brings bold new and traditional rationales that challenge the notion of creativity.
