Children365- a national initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation that encourages people to celebrate children every day of the year.
The Victorian State Government is proud to partner with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation by hosting a family fun day to launch Children365.
The event at Melbourne Museum is set to feature kite and puppet making workshops, celebrity guests, children's book author appearances, sport and games, arts and crafts.
On the first day of Children365 each year, adults will also be encouraged to make promises and declarations about their children for the year ahead: 3 reasons I love my children 6 ways they make me smile 5 things we will do together this year.
The concept was developed after the tragic death of Darcey Freeman.
Following the loss of their precious little girl, Darcey's mother and her family suggested an annual day to cherish all children. They asked The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to help make it a reality.
The launch of this initiative on the final day of Children's Week 2009 signifies the end of a week of celebrating children and the commitment to cherish and protect our children every day of the year.

Venue
Sydney Opera House at Bennelong Point
Date
16th August-25th August
Book
Varietynsw.org.au
This year's 25th anniversary event will be a bit of a re-enactment of the very first Bash, in that it too will depart from the Sydney Opera House at 'Bennelong Point,' on (16th August arriving at Broken Hill on 25th August).
The Bash is not a race or rally but rather a drive in the outback with like-minded fund raisers, driving miles for the smiles, enjoying travelling to parts of Australia that they may not otherwise see, at the same time as raising money to support kids in need. While there are few rules, blatant cheating and bribery are not only allowed but encouraged and bashers must be in a pre 1972 vehicle, decorated as weird and wonderfully as possible!
The trip will travel some of Australia's remotest regions, detouring through Woomera, Alice Springs and the notorious Oodnadatta track east of Coober Pedy, onto their final destination of Broken Hill.
Variety Bashes Australia wide last year raised over $8 million and Variety NSW this year have set a goal of raising $2 million net during its 11 day adventure. Each year Variety receives an overwhelming amount of appeals from individuals, associations, institutions, hospitals and schools. All appeals are carefully and thoughtfully considered by their volunteer committees and once a grant is approved, Variety makes direct payment. In 2008, Variety granted 296 appeals and over $13 million was given to help individual children, hospitals, schools, community groups and charitable organisations.

Canon Creative for a Cause
Venue
www.canon.com.au/creativeforacause
Date
Open to entries on Thursday 28 May and close Friday 10 July
Canon Australia has launched Canon Creative for a Cause, a national campaign targeting the thousands of Australian charities in desperate need of awareness and financial support.
Based on the belief that a single image can change the world, the campaign aims to inspire Australians through photography for the chance to win their nominated charity $60,000 and to become one of Canon's preferred charities in 2009.
The Canon Creative for a Cause launch coincides with the release of Canon's Charitable Giving Survey which suggests that despite being a nation of charitable people, Australians are shunning smaller causes in favour of high profile appeals, leaving our smaller charities inadequately funded and struggling to survive.
The survey found that large charities are receiving on average 34 times the amount of funding through donations than smaller charities each year. This translates on average to $5.6 million for the larger charities compared with just $164,000 for the smaller, lesser-know charities.
Creative for a Cause is about celebrating the power of an image and providing a platform for Australians to raise awareness of the causes they are most passionate about. Creative for a Cause also works to highlight the many valuable, but lesser known charities in operation across the country that don't necessarily have a high profile but whose voices need to be heard.
One important charity Redkite, that supports children, young people and their families through cancer by providing emotional support, financial assistance and educational services, says that cash donations by the public are vitally important at this time as they receive no government funding.
Canon is urging all Australians to participate in Creative for a Cause by simply taking a photo that reflects the causes they are most passionate about, along with a 25 word description of what their photo represents and who their selected charity is, and uploading it to www.canon.com.au/creativeforacause.
The Judging Process: Twenty four images will be selected by popular vote and editor's picks and will be reviewed by a judging panel who will then select the top five finalists. From these top five images, one entry will be chosen based on popularity and photographic merit. Canon will then donate $60,000 to this entrant's nominated charity. In addition to the $60,000 donation, Canon will reward the winning entry and four other finalists with a Canon product prize pack.
People are encouraged to vote for their favourite images at www.canon.com.au/creativeforacause

Cystic Fibrosis Australia's CEO Terry Stewart said, 'We hope Australian's everywhere will support the 65 Roses Day Appeal and help us to continue to provide specialised services to people living with cystic fibrosis and their families. The funds raised will also help support critical research projects into this debilitating illness. With the support of the community our researchers will move closer toward finding a cure,' he said.
On Friday 29 May, purchase 65 Roses Day merchandise including wrist bands, pins, pens and other merchandise.
Ambassador Virginia Gay said, 'I can't think of a more valuable contribution than raising money that will help give kids a chance at life. We can all give a little or purchase merchandise. We have the power to raise vital funds that will help to improve critical health outcomes for children and young adults and importantly, help scientists to continue their search for a cure,' Gay said.
Cystic Fibrosis Australia's CEO Terry Stewart said, 'There are children and young adults in every state and territory of Australia who suffer this debilitating illness. There is no cure. Only with the help of the community, can we ensure every Australian living with cystic fibrosis can have the very best care until we can find the cure. Date
Tuesday, 26 May
Time
10.30 am
The ILP have pledged to provide multiple copies of board books to babies, toddlers and preschool children in remote indigenous communities. Multiple sets of the books will also be provided to schools where students and community members will be taught to read the books. They will then be encouraged to read the books to babies and preschool-aged children both at home and at school.
The ILP is a partnership between the Australian book industry and The Fred Hollows Foundation and for the past three years has raised funds to buy books and literacy material for remote indigenous communities.
"A lack of literacy skills in very remote indigenous communities means that young children growing up in these communities are at a severe disadvantage compared to ordinary Australian children" said David Gaunt, Chair of the ILP. Some children are turning up for school in remote communities having never seen a book. The new early literacy project hopes to directly address the problem by providing babies, toddlers and preschool children with access to a wonderful set of books for early childhood."
Book Buzz will be trialled in a number of remote indigenous communities this year including in Wugularr in the Northern Territory; Warburton in Western Australia and Wilcannia in New South Wales.
Book Buzz will be launched by Therese Rein:
Background on the Indigenous Literacy Project:
-In 2008 over $300,000 was raised -In 2009 money raised by the ILP will fund a full-time Indigenous Literacy Project Co-ordinator based in The Fred Hollows Foundation office in Darwin -In 2009 the ILP will supply books and literacy material to remote indigenous communities in: the Northern Territory (Katherine East Region, East Arnhem and Gulf); in Queensland (Camooweal, Dajarra and Urlampi communities); in South Australia (Port August and Mount Lindsay in the APY lands on border of South Australia); in north western New South Wales in Brewarrina, Wilcannia, Ivanhoe, Engonnia, Bourke and Menindee and in Western Australia in the Ngaanyatjarra region. -In 2009, the ILP in conjunction with the Northern Territory Writers’ Centre funded books to over 70 schools in the Northern Territory.

KOTO, Know One Teach One, is a unique vocational training program and not for profit restaurant that is changing the lives of street and disadvantaged young people in Vietnam.
KOTO began in the late 90's when Jimmy Pham, an Australian Vietnamese tour guide was moved by the plight of young people living on the streets of Hanoi. In 1999, with the assistance of Melbourne Chef Tracey Lister, he started a sandwich shop as a way of providing disadvantaged young Vietnamese with an income and hospitality training; KOTO was born.
KOTO's founder, Jimmy Pham and one of its graduates will host a special fundraising event on Tuesday 26 May in Melbourne, supported by Box Hill Institute and Peregrine Adventures.
Mr Thai, who is accompanying Jimmy, is proof that KOTO is changing lives and giving opportunities to Vietnam's youth. Thai grew up in a poor rural family in Hanam Province. At 14 years old, he came to Hanoi to find work to support his family, because his parents could not afford his schooling. But jobs were hard to get and he ended up as a shoeshine boy, working on the streets for four years until he heard about KOTO.
Meet Jimmy and Mr Thai, hear their stories; bid on wonderful items like a 12 day Peregrine Adventures Vietnam trip for two as part of the silent and live auctions; enjoy good food for a great cause; and help KOTO to continue to provide training for young people in hospitality, English language and life skills, giving them the opportunity to gain good jobs and careers so they can support themselves and their families.

Countdown on for Classic alpine run
Venue
Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
Date
Saturday May 9
The countdown is on for 225 runners keen to sweat it out in the 38km Routeburn Classic adventure run to be held on Saturday May 9 in one of New Zealand's World Heritage areas.
Runners will race from one end to the other of the Routeburn Track, a high alpine track traversing Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park.
Now in its seventh year, entries to this year's race were snapped up online within 30 minutes of registration opening, and there are more than 100 athletes on the waiting list.
Runners will converge at The Divide, near Milford Sound, for the 8am start gun, and finish near Glenorchy. The fastest elite athletes are expected to cross the finish line in just under three hours.
Event director Evan McWhirter of Good Times Events said the race had gained a loyal following over the years, with good reason.
"It really is the most breath taking adventure run in the country, and arguably the world," he said.
"It generates worldwide interest and has significant appeal to both domestic and international athletes. Numbers are limited to meet safety requirements but it's become the source of running legend as previous competitors have spread their race stories around the globe.
"Many of those on the waiting list have a reasonable chance of getting in as athletes pull out because of injury, so it pays to keep up the training schedule and keep fingers crossed!"
New sponsor 2XU (pronounced Two Times You), an Australian-based sports apparel company, has joined the event sponsorship lineup and is offering all competitors and support crew the chance to buy a highly technical long-sleeved runners shirt at less than a third of the recommended retail price.

In honour of the bicentennial of Joseph Haydn's death, the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital (RBWH) Foundation is proud to present, for the first time in Australia, a special charity concert performance of Haydn's L'Isola Disabitata (The Deserted Island).
This exclusive one-off performance will be conducted by Richard Lewis and performed by tenor Gregory Massingham, soprano Sarah Crane, baritone Shaun Brown and mezzo-soprano Georgie Hawes with music by the Opera at the Old Museum Orchestra (featuring members of the Queensland Orchestra).
The story of L'Isola Disabitata focuses on Costanza who, after being shipwrecked on a deserted island with her younger sister, raises her to fear men. Thirteen years later, after being captured by pirates, her husband Gernando returns with his younger, unmarried friend, Enrico.
Opera at the Old Museum is an initiative of Queensland Orchestra violinist Rachel Smith to help raise funds for research conducted at RBWH by her father, Professor Harry Smith.
Professor Smith has had a distinguished medical career, working both in Brisbane and London. His research endeavours have led to better understanding of childhood leukaemia, glandular fever and meningococcal disease.
Money raised from this performance of I'sola Disibatata will be used by Professor Smith to purchase a special part for an electron microsope which, through a technique never before used, will help detect cell abnormalities and other causative agents that could be behind such health issues as Crohn’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Kawasaki disease.

Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute
Venue
Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour.
Date
August 1
Each year, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI) holds a Gala fundraising dinner as a tribute to the life and achievements of the late Dr Victor Chang, who tragically had his life stolen from him in 1991.
By way of background, the VCCRI, was established in 1994 to honour the vision and memory of pioneering cardiothoracic surgeon and humanitarian, the late Dr Victor Chang. To fulfil its mission it strives to conduct the highest quality fundamental research into cardiovascular diseases, as well as playing a major role in disease prevention, in the training of cardiovascular researchers and doctors, and in the rapid transfer of new knowledge, treatments and diagnostics to the patient.
2009 marks the 15th Anniversary of the VCCRI's estabIishment. In those 15 years the VCCRI has become nationally and internationally recognized as a center-of-excellence in heart research. Heart disease, unfortunately, does not attract the same media and celebrity attention as cancer and yet it remains Australia's Number 1 killer and a little known fact is that four times more women die of heart disease compared to breast cancer.
We have in the past been most privileged to have had a number of very special people attend these Victor Chang Day functions - people who have recognised Victor's humanitarian and pioneering work. This year we have invited the Hon Kevin Rudd, MP, Prime Minister to be our Guest-of-Honour.
We are hoping around 500 guests will attend this very special Gala Black Tie fundraiser which will be held on August 1, in the Parkside ballroom at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour.

Women in Super are pleased to announce that registrations for the Mother's Day Classic will open on Monday 23 February. Last year 67,000 people took part nationally in the event, raising $1.2 million for breast cancer research, and close to 70,000 are expected this year.
The Mother's Day Classic is a nationwide community event, bringing together those who have lost someone to breast cancer, to others who want to get fit and donate to a worthy cause. It's a poignant time to think of those who are no longer with us, with participants able to remember a loved one by wearing a personal message on a tribute card; or by writing a note of encouragement to those who are currently undergoing treatment.
In 2009, the Mother's Day Classic will be held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney CBD, Parramatta and introducing Geelong and the Gold Coast. There are also numerous regional events, with local communities encouraged to get involved by staging their own Mother's Day Classic, no matter how big or small! Participants can choose to run or walk.
The Mother's Day Classic is organised by Women in Super, a group that provides networking opportunities for women in the superannuation and finance industries. Since inception in 1998, the event has raised $4.4 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation's research grants. With one in nine women expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime, improved research means better treatment options and more chances of early detection.

When the 2009 Superbike World Championship begins at Victoria's Phillip Island on March 1, the grid will be practically unrecognisable from the one that lined up in Portugal's final round this year.
The absence of three-time world champion Troy Bayliss will be an obvious sign of change, but the field will also be peppered with an influx of quality new names, mostly British, as well as personnel changes and the addition of two marques which is certain to make the racing more even and competitive than ever.
Four Australians will contest the 2009 WSBK title - dual world champion Troy Corser (BMW) and Broc Parkes (Kawasaki) in factory teams, Gold Coast's Karl Muggeridge on a satellite Suzuki, and Adelaide's Brendan Roberts aboard a privateer Ducati.
The Phillip Island round will officially kick off with practice and qualifying for the two world championship classes on Friday, February 27, before final qualifying on Saturday and the big races on Sunday - two 22-lappers for Superbike and a single 21-lapper for Supersport.
Phillip Island will also play host to an all-new Superpole format for Superbike on Saturday afternoon, with the top 16 riders no longer racing for grid positions over one flying lap.
Instead, the top 20 riders in regulation qualifying will begin a process that takes in three elimination stints of 12 minutes each. After the first stint, the four slowest riders will be eliminated, and eight riders after the second stint. The third and final stint will see with the eight remaining riders go into battle for the final grid positions - effectively the first two rows.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Date
February 2009
Book
For More Information www.ovariancancer.net.au
Every year in Australia it is estimated that 1500 Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and more than 850 women will die of the disease.
Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer death in women. It is now more common than cervical cancer and it kills many more women.
About 75 per cent of women who are diagnosed will be at an advanced stage, where the cancer has spread and is very difficult to treat successfully.
When ovarian cancer is diagnosed at an early stage the outlook is very good, with as many as 90 per cent of patients being cured.
There are no reliable early detection tests for ovarian cancer, so awareness is a woman's best defence.
Ovarian Cancer needs to be considered if a woman experiences one or more of the following symptoms more than 12 times in one month and therefore a GP needs to consider ovarian cancer as a possibility:
-Bloating, swelling and a feeling of fullness in your stomach -Unexplained abdominal or back pain -Feeling full / difficulty eating -Increased urinary urgency

Book
Entries open now: www.smh.com.au/halfmarathon
This year's race takes on a new significance, with entrants not only running for their own personal accomplishment, but also 'Running for Kerryn McCann'. As runners prepare to undertake the 21.1km event held on Sunday 17 May they can chose to honour the memory of Kerryn McCann by donating to the McCann family's charity of choice, the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). McCann made Half Marathon history, winning the event a record of four times. Race Director Michael Russell has said "the SMH Half Marathon is proud to dedicate the 2009 race to Kerryn and to help celebrate her fantastic achievements in our event and distance running generally."
"Kerryn McCann's name is synonymous with the race and she epitomises what this event is all about - running hard, competing with determination and grit and finishing with a smile."
BCNA spokesperson and friend of Kerryn's, Raelene Boyle, said "I'm delighted that Breast Cancer Network Australia is the chosen charity for the SMH Half Marathon. 'Running for Kerryn' is such a wonderful way for Australians to pay tribute to our brave champion."
"I encourage everyone to register for this event or support someone who is running, and help make a real difference to the 13,000 Australians who will be told they have breast cancer, this year," Boyle said.
The women's trophy will also be renamed the 'Kerryn McCann Trophy' and a new amount of $1000 will go to the first man and women under 19 years of age to cross the finish line, encouraging the participation of junior athletes. Elite male and female competitors in the field will be vying for cash prizes of $5,000 for 1st, $3,000 2nd, $2,000 3rd.
Starting and finishing at Hyde Park for the second year, runners will take off from College Street, adjacent to St Mary's Cathedral and Hyde Park North and follow the same route as in previous years around the harbourside, Mrs Macquarie's Chair, through the Rocks, past the Harbour Bridge and Sydney's financial district and finally, along Macquarie Street.
Now in its 18th year, the prestigious event has always attracted the nation's best distance runners including McCann.

The work of the collective artist group will be available online for viewing from Thursday 26th March. www.artlifeappeal.org
An 'Art for Life' Bushfire Appeal, supported by the City of Melbourne, will see artists from across Australia unite to build an impressive body of art work to raise funds for those affected by the recent Victorian bushfires.
To date, over 100 artists including commercial and public galleries have donated artwork which will be displayed and auctioned at the public charity event.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said this is a terrific example of how the creative arts community can come together to assist those in need.
"Melbourne is a city recognised for its arts community and culture, so it's wonderful to see the arts community uniting to draw on their talent to help those devastated by the recent bushfires," the Lord Mayor said.
Contributing artists to date include Lisa Roet, Heather Schimmer, Angela Brennan, Debra Rhee, Jamie Daddo, Thomas DeKessler, Elisabeth Sand and Mary Newsome.
In addition to the work donated by artists, a range of celebrities and high profile figures will be approached to create unique pieces of artwork for the 'Art for Life' Bushfire Appeal auction.
Television talent John Deeks will host the charity event and the donated artwork is expected to raise in excess of $50,000 for the bushfire appeal.
Potential bidders for artwork and established or emerging artists wishing to donate artwork can visit www.artlifeappeal.org to view the auction items or register their interest in donating artwork.

MOTHERS DAY: Karma Currency
Book
www.karmacurrency.com
It's fair to say that we all owe a lot to our Mums. They raised us, drove us to school, taught us right from wrong and explained very calmly why wearing a superhero costume and gumboots to the supermarket isn't the done thing. When you take all of this into consideration, it's also fair to say that someone who's had such a remarkable influence on your life might deserve a little more than tea towels and terracotta trinkets when the second Sunday in May rolls around.
This Mothers Day, Karma Currency, Australia's first tax deductible Charity Gift Voucher - www.karmacurrency.com - is presenting all Australians with the opportunity to forgo the flowers, kick aside the clichd chocolates and give your Mum a gift that proves you were listening when she taught you about the importance of giving.
Ashley Rosshandler, Founder and CEO of Karma Currency, spoke recently about how a charity gift voucher could be the perfect Mothers Day gift to give to the most charitable woman in your life. "Karma Currency has always been about giving people the ability to connect their loved ones with the charities and causes closest to their hearts. With Mothers Day fast approaching, it's the perfect time to give the gift of good Karma to your Mum, Sister, Grandma or Aunty," said Rosshandler.
Examples of just a few of the Karma-clad presents you can give via www.karmacurrency.com include: -Delivering a teddy bear (Children's Hospital Foundation - $5) -Producing a talking book (Vision Australia - $20) -Buying baking trays for a soup kitchen (FareShare - $36) -Sponsoring a nursing scholarship (Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant - $100)
Since its inception in 2007, over 200 of the world's most trusted and beloved charities (including Oxfam, RSPCA, Lifeline and The Cancer Council), have all become Karma Currency partners.

"I still manage to live independently with the fantastic support of the MND Association and my health service providers''. My computer allows me to network with all my friends. As I have started to become physically weaker, MND NSW has provided me with all the equipment I need to make my everyday easier."
The types of care and support people living with MND and their families need to help them live as well as possible include: Co-ordinated support and care; Access to timely information; Respite and research ; and Early diagnosis and equipment.
Various fundraising or awareness raising events are being held throughout Australia during the week which culminates in Blue Cornflower Day, Friday 8 May. For a list of events visit www.mndaust.asn.au
During MND Week and on Blue Cornflower Day you can make a donation, volunteer or buy a blue cornflower - a symbol of hope - through MND Associations or on-line at: www.mndaust.asn.au or phone 1800 777 175.

SASSI Charity movie night!
Come and enjoy an exclusive advanced screening of the delightful new film, Easy Virtue at The Dendy, Circular Quay (due for release 12/3/09)
Based on the 1924 play by Noël Coward, Easy Virtue marks the much-anticipated return of Australian director Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert). Set in the late 1920s, featuring an impressive cast including Jessica Biel, Ben Barnes, Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas, Easy Virtue is effervescent entertainment telling the story of Larita (Biel), a glamorous young American woman who is swept off her feet by young Englishman, John Whittaker (Barnes), and marries impetuously. However when the couple return to the family home, his mother Mrs Whittaker (Scott Thomas) has an instant allergic reaction to her new daughter-in-law - and a battle of wits ensues.
As the sparks fly and secrets are revealed, Larita attempts to tip-toe through the minefield laid by her mother-in-law yet at the same time finds an unexpected ally in John's father (Firth). Like a vintage bottle of champagne, Easy Virtue fizzes with lacerating wit, elegance and fun.

Australia's newest national triathlon and multisport series, the Challenge Series, is ready to fire up summer, with the series kicking off at Adelaide's famous Glenelg Beach on November 28-30 2008, before touring around the country.
The events are aimed to appeal to everyone's sporting appetite and are set to attract not only energetic kids, but busy mums, stressed executives, pensioners, elite triathletes and even Olympians to the start line.
The three-day events see fun runs scheduled for each Friday, with the weekend incorporating races for junior competitors, an Enticer event for novice athletes, aquathlons (swim/run), as well as sprint, Olympic Distance and elite disciplines for more experienced campaigners.
The Enticer event is a new initiative, providing people with a less intimidating introduction to the sport of triathlon by way of a 400-metre swim, 10km bicycle ride and 2.5km run.
The Olympic Distance races (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run) across the seven sites will act as qualifying events for the 2009 ITU Triathlon World Championships to be held on the Gold Coast next September. Stampin' Up!, a Sydney direct-sales crafting company, is encouraging Aussies to get involved in its Bushfire Appeal campaign to help victims of the Victoria bushfires.
From 12 February until 31 March 2009, Stampin' Up! will donate half of the retail value of sales from a select group of ten stamp sets to the Australian Red Cross to assist in the relief effort.
To date, Stampin' Up! independent consultants [demonstrators,] many of whom have also donated their sales commissions, have raised over $31,000 for the cause.
Stampin' Up!'s demonstrators throughout Australia and New Zealand are also donating their time and talents to serve those affected by the disaster. In addition to donating cash, the demonstrators are holding crafting workshops specifically to create handmade cards to donate to victims staying in tent camps so they can communicate with friends and relatives.
Claire Daly, a Victorian demonstrator says, " I think we all wanted to do something. One of the women in my downline works for the local member of parliament in Healesville. Apparently over 180 of the people who have died are in her constituent, so our team are making cards for her to send to the families. It's heartwarming to see such a great compassionate response among demonstrators and Australians in general."
"The response from our demonstrators has been outstanding," says Australian general manager, Aaron Scott. "The idea to hold stamping events and workshops originated when one of our demonstrators heard a comment from a woman who lost her home saying that she didn't even have a birthday card to give her son. It's inspiring to see people reaching out this way."

Many age group competitors will be vying for qualifying points to gain selection in the Australian team for the World Championships on the Gold Coast later this year. If this sounds a bit daunting, the last two races of the weekend are for you. At noon, the Sydney Water Enticer Triathlon gives first-timers a chance to try out what the growing sport of triathlon has to offer. The kids get a chance to shine with the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader TRYstars Kids' Triathlon, with three distances to choose from for 7 to 15-year-olds.

Australian children participate in global art initiative in support of Save the Children.
Calling on all teachers and parents - register now and help students and children to make this event successful. World Kids Colouring Day could change the life of a Colombian child forever and teach children about a very different world.
STAEDTLER, the manufacturer of writing instruments, has united globally to support the international child rights organisation Save the Children through this special promotional day. In this colouring campaign, Australian children (and children the world over) are invited to colour and raise money for their beautiful artworks, to help other children in need.
STAEDTLER is calling upon all teachers, educators and parents to get involved and organise their own colouring events at school, kindergarten and home. Ideas include; a colouring day or colouring workshop, or a colouring event in which the artworks are exhibited and/or auctioned, the possibilities for creativity are unlimited. Further information, suggestion, fundraising ideas can be found at: www.world-kids-colouring-day.com.au. On this website, schools and organisations are able to register to support World Kids Colouring Day, and receive a starter kit to inspire their colouring activities. There is even a beautiful 10 piece educational mural puzzle for the classroom wall of a Colombian scene. Also available are teaching resources and information to plan lessons and educate children about life in Colombia.
As the world's largest independent child rights organisation, Save the Children works in over 100 countries, including Australia. With the donations collected from World Kids Colouring Day, STAEDTLER will support Save the Children's "Rewrite the Future" program which focuses on securing quality education for the millions of children out of school due to war and armed conflict in Colombia. STAEDTLER will support Save the Children to develop learning programs for children, train teachers as well as provide adequate teaching and learning materials.
The universal language of pictures is understood the world over and unites children on all continents. Colouring is an important form of expression, especially for small children still discovering their world. World Kids Colouring Day needs the support of adults to help co-ordinate the fundraising events and to help children understand how their contribution can change the world of a child less fortunate.
STAEDTLER will recognise those children and schools who have organised the most creative campaigns, those with the highest donation and those with donations totalling more than $500 ('Donation Champions') with great colouring sets.

Sydney Duo To Paddle 740km From Byron Bay To Bondi Beach Over Christmas And New Year Raising Money For Prostate Cancer
Date
20th December 2008
Book
www.b2b4prostate.blogspot.com.au
On 20th December 2008, two Sydney city workers will be setting out from Byron Bay in a two-person sea kayak to take on a twenty day adventure of a lifetime, as they paddle down the east coast of Australia to Bondi Beach. They'll be braving 5m swells, 30 knot winds, reefs, sharks and muscle fatigue this Christmas and New Year as they raise money for charity.
Scott Timbrell from Bondi and Rob Lowe from Manly, have set themselves the challenge of raising $10,000 for The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, by paddling a two person sea kayak along the 740km of coast line. Scott's father, Douglas Timbrell was recently diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, but due to the skills of doctors at the Sydney hospital, he's now fit and well and will be shadowing the pair down the coast as they prepare for fundraising events in each town along the way.
Scott Timbrell said, "We've been told about sharks and dangerous weather that we'll have to face on the trip, but it's nothing compared to being told that your dad has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. I thought at the time that I could either sit around and do nothing, or get up and do something about it. So here we are."
Prostate Cancer is a serious but avoidable illness. It's as prevalent as breast cancer is in women, but general awareness of the disease is lower and often diagnosis is made too late. Men over 40 should go to the doctor and ask for a routine check-up.
Scott and Rob are relative novices when it comes to sea kayaking. Rob said, "Neither of us have ever done anything like this before and training has been tough to fit around our jobs, but we're on track and are both excited about getting onto the water. We're looking forward to drumming up some support and funds for Prostate Cancer in coastal towns along the way."
All equipment has been organised by friends, sponsors and people who support their cause. Adventurer James Castrission, who achieved the world first trans Tasman kayak crossing said, "It's great to see fellow kayakers getting out there and challenging themselves, whilst at the same time raising funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer. Both Justin and I believe in what Rob and Scott are going out to achieve and will support them in any way that we can. We can only urge you to do the same."
Anyone wishing to follow their journey can visit their www.b2b4prostate.blogspot.com.au website where pictures taken by a waterproof Olympus Tough 1030sw camera, videos and news, will be uploaded along the way. On the site there is also a link for those wishing to donate money to The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Women Win at Globla Footbal Tournament
Book
www.globalgiving.com/womenscup
The Homeless World Cup today announced a partnership with Women Win to bring the powerful life-changing benefits of football to thousands of homeless women and their communities around the world.
The partnership begins with 20,000 euros funding from Women Win for the development of women's grass roots football in Colombia, enabling Team Colombia to make its debut at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup.
In addition, Women Win also initiates a Challenge Award of 5,000 euros that will be awarded to one of the community organisations participating in the Homeless World Cup in December to help them implement their ideas for sustainable programs for homeless girls and women in their home country. As the partnership grows it will also look for opportunity to create social enterprises that contribute to sustainable change for women and girls and their communities.
The Homeless World Cup is an annual international tournament, which provides the opportunity for people who are homeless to change their own lives. The sixth Homeless World Cup takes place in Melbourne from 1-7 December 2008, which will include the first Women's Cup in the tournament's history. 8 national women's teams will participate from Cameroon, Colombia, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Zambia, Liberia and Paraguay.
Australia is fielding three reserve players in the Women's Homeless World Cup - Cheryl Dunleavy, Michelle Jerram and Stacey Radaic, all from Melbourne. These players can be drafted into any all-female side that has three or more injured or unavailable players during the tournament
77% of players involved experience a significant life change; no-longer using drugs and alcohol, moving into homes, jobs, education, training, repairing relationships and becoming coaches or players with semi-pro teams. 94% claim to have a renewed motivation for life. Michele da Silva played for Team Brazil at the Copenhagen 2007 tournament and was recently selected for Brazil U21's women's squad. Cherie from Team Liberia has won a four-year athlete scholarship to a USA college.
Mel Young, Founder and President, Homeless World Cup commented: "Women participating in previous Homeless World Cups have been tremendously successful in changing their lives. They become change-makers and inspirational leaders in their communities. We want to invite many more women to participate and a partnership with Women Win that will grow as both organisations develop is great way to create effective lasting change."
Founder and Executive Director of Women Win, Ms Astrid Aafjes said: "Homeless World Cup and Women Win share mutual values and goals using sport as an empowerment strategy for homeless and disadvantaged girls and women worldwide. By working together we can further raise awareness and have a greater impact."
"Women Win is proud to support the Colombia homeless women's team this year. The position of women is very difficult in Colombia due to the years of conflict. Especially this group, homeless women, they suffer from gender related violence, low levels of education and are working on the streets from young ages"

Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse Diners Double Target to reach $200K Donation to Royal Flying Doctors Service

Celebrating the one year anniversary of the association with the Royal Flying Doctors Service of Australia (RFDS) could not have come at a better time for Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse restaurants and their diners nationally as they double the set target to reach $200,000 in donations. It was only twelve months ago in October 2007 that Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse set a target of $100k in donations to be raised by 31 December 2008.
The donation was the contribution of diners across three restaurant locations - Woolloomooloo, Brisbane and Canberra. One dollar from every Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse diner goes toward raising vital funds for the RFDS, the first, largest and most comprehensive aero-medical association in the world. The donation is in recognition of the RFDS support of the Australian countryside, intrinsic to the success and soul of Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse.
"We are really proud to be associated with the Royal Flying Doctors Service. Urban dwellers often forget about the remote nature of regional Australia and the challenges faced by country people every day. Having such a significant donation raised by diners in our restaurants makes me feel very honoured to have such caring patrons. This achievement is a credit to our customers," says Kingsley Smith, Managing Director of Kingsleys Restaurant Group.
The group's strong link with country Australia comes from working in partnership with farmers from regional areas to produce premium quality beef, which is then used in Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse restaurants nationally. Kingsley's Restaurant Group is proud to support the RFDS who continue to be a vital provider of healthcare to over 80% of the nation. The RFDS is no more than 90 minutes away from anyone in Australia in need of urgent medical attention. Money raised for the RFDS by Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse restaurant diners will go towards purchasing and fitting out flying doctor aircraft, major pieces of medical equipment and training.
Nigel Milan, National CEO for the RFDS says; "The additional funding provided by Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse restaurants gives certainty and sustainability and ensures the Royal Flying Doctors Service can focus on what it does best - providing vital top-level medical care to regional and remote communities. For a restaurant group to raise a $200,000 donation in 12 months is a huge feat and greatly appreciated."
For almost 15 years now, Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse has become a leading provider of top quality steak and seafood to the Sydney area, sourcing their produce directly from some of Australia's best producers. With locations now in Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne opening in November this year, the quality food and service is available across Australia's eastern seaboard.

Introducing Adelaide's Premier Fashion Event, Let Them Eat Cake
Date
December 5th, 2008
With Adelaide's Queen's Theatre as a spectacular backdrop, Pride Models is bringing decadence back with an unforgettable fashion event titled "Let Them Eat Cake" on December 5th, 2008.
This glamorous affair will be featuring an exclusive fashion parade previewing designs of special guest, Leigh Buchanan from Australia's 'Project Runway', who will also attend the event. Also on show will be collections especially created in the theme of "Let Them Eat Cake" and Marie Antoinette by Little Potty Red Shoes and Porcelain by Damian Porcaro.
Guests to this "one of a kind" event can expect to be treated to experiences synonymous with 18th Century European Royalty, delivered with a modern twist. French champagne will flow and cake delicacies abundant to tempt the Marie Antoinette in all who attend.
Entertainment by Niki Vasilakis, one of the most exciting violinists to have emerged from Australia in recent years, will add to the atmosphere, as she captivates guests with her velvet tones, similar to those played for the Australian Prime Minister at a State Dinner, Performances at the Rockefeller Centre New York for the Anzac day memorial, UN head quarters New York, Washington Cathedral, and Athens Olympic Torch Celebrations Sydney Opera House.
In addition to the Bourgeoisie tickets, which will gain fashionistas entry to this indulgent affair, High Court tickets will also be available for purchase. Similar to the division between classes in 18th Century France, the High Court will be treated as Royalty, in a special, seated arena that will be offering a more elite experience for guests.
One thousand guests are expected, and $10 from every ticket sold will go directly to The National Breast Cancer Foundation to aid in research and support.
Pride Models Director, Christabel Buder, says that, "To date, no event of this calibre has been seen or experienced in Adelaide. This really is the fashion event to rival those in the eastern states."
"Adelaide can prepare itself for the fashion extravaganza of the year; a night of glamour, decadence and luxury."

But imagine if you could give a gift that could protect a forest, find a cure, aid the arts, or perform countless other wonderful acts. Vision: Karma Currency's overall vision is to connect people around Australia with the charities and causes that are closest to their hearts (whether it be training a guide dog or a soup kitchen down the street) and in doing so, make charitable acts a part of our everyday lives.
What Does Karma Currency Actually Do? Karma Currency offers an alternative to stock-standard, general gift giving. Instead of giving platters, socks, photo frames and other useless gifts this initiative allows companies and individuals to give the gift of Charity Gift Vouchers. This Charitable voucher can be sent to families or friends, customers or colleagues, empowering them to give the donation to the charities they care about most. In short; Karma Currency offers Australians the chance to give a gift that will literally have a positive, ongoing effect on the lives of others - as opposed to giving a gift someone may not want, use and might even secretly hate.
All Karma Currency gift vouchers over $2 are tax deductible.
Charities that are proudly associated with Karma Currency include: Alannah and Madeline Foundation Clean Up Australia Limited Guide Dogs Victoria Limbs 4 Life Rainforest Rescue RSPCA SIDS and Kids The Cancer Council Australia

Fee
Cost $3 and $4 respectively
Book
www.thesmithfamily.com.au
Although The Smith Family is there for families throughout the year, Christmas is an especially important time for the charity because supporting children at Christmas is how the organisation began. It was Christmas 86 years ago when five businessmen decided to donate toys to children at a local orphanage. The men were conscious that, although they had each had a 'good year' and their children would be well provided for, many children were not as fortunate.
The men decided to share their good fortune and spread some joy at a local orphanage on Christmas Eve. Wanting to remain anonymous, they called themselves 'The Smiths' and so The Smith Family was born.
The Smith Family's time-honoured tradition of giving toys and books to children at Christmas has grown over the years with The Smith Family now delivering gifts to more than 20,000 disadvantaged children across the country.
Woolworths is a proud supporter of The Smith Family and has donated food for Christmas hampers and organised staff volunteers to help pack and deliver the hampers. You too can help by purchasing a novelty light-up snow dome pen for $4, or a light up keyring for $3 from any Woolworths supermarket. You can also make a donation to The Smith Family's Christmas Appeal by visiting www.thesmithfamily.com.au or calling 1800 024 069. Your support will ensure kids in need won't miss out on a gift this Christmas. It will also allow The Smith Family to continue providing education support in the year ahead.

15th November 2008 (Nationwide)
Two of Australia's most loved and successful female recording artists, Deni Hines and Christine Anu, are takin it to the streets again in 2009 after the success of their 2008 East-Coast of Australia tour.
While promoting their 2008 tour, Deni and Christine so happened to be performing one of their show duets TAKIN IT TO THE STREETS on the Today Show (Nine Network, Australia). On the same show was a heartfelt segment about the plight of homelessness in Australia accompanied by Captain Paul Mould of the Salvation Army's Oasis Youth Support Network, who take care and provide much needed services for the homeless and youth of Australia (who come from all walks of life.)
No less than 5 minutes after walking off set, Christine and Deni turned to each other and said "we've got to do something to help" and the recording of TAKIN IT TO THE STREETS was set in motion.
Deni and Christine will release their version of TAKIN IT TO THE STREETS on 15 November 2008 (Nationwide) with fifty percent (50%) of net profits going to the Salvation Army's Youth Homelessness Oasis Foundation and the Everyone Is Homeless Fund.
