Enigmatic Sydney Duo Chymes Return with New Single Dreaming

Listen to Dreaming on Spotify

Mesmerising Sydney duo Chymes are pleased to present their latest single Dreaming. The intimate recording showcases their innate ability to write enigmatic, restrained and encapsulating electro-pop.

Dreaming sets out with Kiersten's charming vocals on lush synth lines. The meeting of female and male vocals mid-way through the verse merges delicate harmonies, bound and perfectly blended. Dreaming takes you on a journey to their alternate world where the only thing that matters is immersing yourself in the music.

"Dreaming is about the euphoric feeling when you experience something that feels larger than life, like coming up with an exciting idea or falling in love and how you find yourself being whisked away to another world. It was inspired by the feeling we get when we make music."

Following the success of their debut EP Grow, and follow up singles Bloom and Shade in 2017, Chymes return to reel you back in with a new electronic vibe that still rings true to their original intimate sound.

Comprised of Kiersten Nyman and Cameron Taylor, Chymes are known for contrasting gentle flirtatious beats with haunting lyrics to cultivate their own unique brand of electronic-pop. Their captivating audiences globally with 3 millions+ streams worldwide on Apple Music and Spotify.

The pair have found a sweet spot by experimenting with each other's contrastingly dark lyrics and playful innocent sounds to create what is uniquely Chymes. The bedroom-studio project continues as Chymes have promised a new and exciting musical journey for 2018.

From a converted spot on triple j's unearthed rotation, to fan made videos of their lyrics translated into Spanish, hailed as "mesmerising" (Indie Shuffle), with "hints of Purity Ring with its eerie vocals and captivating soundscapes" (Howl & Echoes) and a "new talent" (The Music Ninja). Chymes are bringing a fresh new sound in the fertile Australian independent music scene.

Interview with Chymes (Kiersten Nyman and Cameron Taylor)

Question: How would you describe your music?

Kiersten Nyman: It's always hard to describe your own music! I guess we would say we make lush moody tunes with playful elements combined with contemplative lyrics. We try and make music that puts people into a new world full of dreamy and delicate soundscapes.

Question: What inspired the track, Dreaming?

Kiersten Nyman: Dreaming was inspired by the feeling we get when we make music. It is about the euphoric feeling when you experience something that feels larger than life, like coming up with an exciting idea or falling in love and how you find yourself being whisked away to another world.

Question: How does it feel to hear your track on triple j?

Kiersten Nyman: It's so cool! Triple J is an awesome platform to find new music and we are glad the J team like our stuff!

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Kiersten Nyman: Dreaming is definitely up there as a favourite, but lately we have been performing our next single live as well and that has also been lots of fun. Both songs are a little more upbeat and they give heaps of energy live.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Cameron Taylor: Recording for me! I love getting lost in experimenting with gear and playing with sounds

Kiersten Nyman: I really enjoy playing live. I love interacting with the audience and experiencing our songs on a big sounds system.

Question: What is the story behind the name, Chymes?

Kiersten Nyman: When we had just started writing together, Cameron's favourite album at the time was Pala by Friendly Fires and there is a song on it called Chimes. The word just stuck with us and felt right, so we adopted it and made it our own.

Question: How did the band come together?

Kiersten Nyman: Chymes came about when I was writing my own music as a folk artist and needed a producer. I found Cameron through some mutual friends and we began working together. We started to turn what we were creating into something neither of us had explored before. We found we had similar ambitions and decided to pursue them together as Chymes.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Cameron Taylor: Exploring soundscapes, playing with gear and listening to new music.

Kiersten Nyman: Finding new music. I like hearing things that people haven't done before or have a new twist on a common idea or technique.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Kiersten Nyman: So many! But some that we are loving at the moment are: Refs
Christian Loffler
Zayn
Phoria
Sasha Sloan

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Kiersten Nyman: Ed Sheeran – I think everyone knows why he is so great! I accidentally found him one day on youtube and he has such a finely tuned ability to write songs. I taught myself guitar just by watching him play over and over.

Cameron Taylor: John Mayer – I really admired him as a guitarist and I watched a lot of his interviews and lectures online. I was really interested in what he had to say about the industry and it inspired me to learn more!

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Kiersten Nyman: We could make a long list but some at the top would be Glass Animals, John Hopkins, Refs, Zayn, Shallou.
