In a world of six billion people, it only takes one to change your life.

Disillusioned economics professor, Walter Vale (played by SIX FEET UNDER's Richard Jenkins) moves through life in a trance. When he visits Manhatten for business, he is shocked to find a find a beautiful young woman, Zainab (Danai Gurira) soaking in the bathtub of his rarely used apartment. But Zainab and her boyfriend Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), a Syrian musician, aren't squatters, but a young couple who have rented the apartment from a scam artist. With nowhere else to go, Walter invites them to stay until they find alternative accommodation. But it's Walter who finds something - himself. When Tarek, who gives the uptight Walter lessons on the African drum, is arrested, Walter tries to intercede with U.S. Immigration. He even provides comfort for Tarek's distraught mother, Mouna (Hiam Abbass), and in the process rediscovers the man he's always wanted to be.
