Evangeline My Kingdom Interview

Having bolted out of the gate with instant spins on Triple J and high rotation support from Unearthed last year, Evangeline's ethereal dark pop single 'My Kingdom" has been given a tasty makeover by US-based remix producer, William Black.

William has only just immersed himself in the dance music scene, but he has already caught the eye of Gareth Emery who supported his remix of "Emotional" by Flux Pavilion & Matthew Koma, and Adventure Club who regularly play the remix he did of their song "Thunderclap".

William Black's take on "My Kingdom" by Evangeline commences with Evangeline's hypnotic vocals, while slowly building into a bass driven yet melodic groove that is entirely out of the box.

" I had a ton of fun working on this remix. Right when I started producing it, all the elements came to me so naturally. It's rare that I can listen to one of my remixes and enjoy it, after spending so many hours working on it, but this is one of those."

Tour Dates:

Thursday, March 10 @ Shebeen, Melbourne CBD (supporting Fluir)
Friday, March 18 @ The Luwow, Fitzroy (supporting Junor)

Interview with Evangeline

Question: What inspired your recent move to East Melbourne from Geelong?

Evangeline: I found that most of the studios I was using and gigs I was playing at/attending were all based up there. I do miss the beach down in Ocean Grove but I do love Melbourne city!

Question: How does it feel to be #6 on Spotify's Global Viral Chart?

Evangeline: Kind of crazy. To be honest I don't think I have quite grasped the thought. To think people overseas are choosing to listen to my song somewhat repeatedly, is a really odd concept.

Question: What should we expect from the upcoming shows?

Evangeline: Lots of sad songs. I like singing sad songs… I am also planning to bring more special guests to feature on stage… So don't come to see me just come in hope that I'll bring someone a lot cooler on stage. (Nah come to see me.)

Question: How would you describe your music?

Evangeline: Dark electro pop. I am getting a lot more electronic but am still keeping the sulking and sad poems to it.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Evangeline: Yes. Especially lyrics. I build my songs based around people who have impacted o me in my life and then they kind of collectively build a theme.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Evangeline: Oh there are a few, I don't listen to myself at all haha. I love The Amity Affliction, Nirvana, Asap Rocky, Halsey, LOLAWOLF, Twenty One Pilots and there are a hell of a lot more I can assure you.

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Evangeline: To be honest all I want to do is release everything that I have and then tour… Not sure at all if that is the actual plan though…

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Evangeline: Never.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Evangeline: I am a lover of all. When I am in the studio I miss the live aspect and when I am on stage I miss the studio. They are just two completely polar opposite euphoric states and I could honestly not tell you my preference! haha.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Evangeline: I am still not sure if I can pinpoint an inspiration. To be honest I think I was just incredibly lucky to have such a supportive family who always pushed me to do whatever made me happy and If a career came from it that would be a bonus.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Evangeline: I think it is the 'self challenge', keeping your mind and body healthy. There can be a lot of setbacks in an industry which is based on whoever listens/sees you critiquing you on there personal preference. Making sure that you have enough confidence and love in your art is a really important and accepting that just because not everyone will like you- it doesn't mean you have to change until they do.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Evangeline: A typical day involves waking up and organising breakfast (something smothered in lemon and avocado.) I usually check my e-mails and social media and then based on whether I have songs to write for other people or myself, I hit up either the home studio or I head out to a local studio. I am starting to integrate more exercise towards the end of the day because I am sitting playing music during the day and need to move. Night time is usually when I see friends or family and go out for dinner. It is pretty repetitive but the fun of it is, I never know if I will be creating for myself or someone else .All I know is I am dedicating most of my days to my art which is pretty cool.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Evangeline: I think It is just the pure freedom to express yourself. I have always been -weird' and -out there' so It's really cool to have a platform when you can do whatever and people just accept it.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Evangeline: I think again it would be way to hard to pin point one artist... I think a DREAM collaboration would be with ASAP Rocky. Man I would love to write something with him really trippy.

Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?

Evangeline: Hell yeah I do: evangelinemusic.net

Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Evangeline: Balance, Acceptance, Support, Generosity and Love.
