Kiwi-born Sydney-siders Foley have just revealed their phenomenal second album, titled That's Life Baby! The pair of alt-pop virtuosos ascend to an entirely new level on the sophomore record, having spent the last year (since the release of their debut album, Crowd Pleaser, in late 2023) refining their craft, unearthing new stories to tell, and finding entirely new ways to tell them;
"That's Life, Baby! sums up our approach to life in a nutshell - we go through highs and lows, love, loss, trauma, but at the end of the day we are positive, light-hearted and optimistic because we have each other through it all. The album is a collection of stories and experiences from the last year, each track describing an interaction with those around us, or a realisation within ourselves, that has had a lasting impact on us as people; each one a little slice of our lives." FOLEY
Noting the feeling that they were able to "really trust [them]selves as songwriters – to be extremely honest and open about [their] lives" on the record, Foley's Ash and Gabe deep-dive into a profound bouquet of topics, emotions and experiences with That's Life, Baby! – "traversing everything from grief and heartbreak, to giddy joy and romance."
With a collection of sensational singles released throughout 2024, namely 'Low and High', 'Heartstrings', 'Unstable', 'Time Of My Life' and 'Miss You All The Time', Foley have already set the bar at an all-time high for the remainder of the project. The record's title track, 'That's Life, Baby!' is energetic and playful, its guitar melodies and vocal styles reminiscent of huge pop names like The 1975 in parts, and more like HAIM in others. Tracks like 'Cardio' and 'Fever', meanwhile, contribute a cheery sense of movement to the album. Well-tailored for dancing and losing oneself in the groove, the former incorporates something of a disco approach, with the latter feeling inspired by the 1980s' sweetest of synthy pop moments.
"That's Life, Baby! reflects a new dynamic in the way we're writing about our feelings and thoughts. We're no longer trying to find answers or navigate life with songs like we used to - we know that life's going to throw everything at us and sometimes you just have to roll with it. We're accepting the messiness, the chaos and the joy that comes with everything. It's a nuanced distinction but feels really fresh and light, and bubbly for us as we grow up. That's Life, Baby!" FOLEY
Working with collaborators Josh Naley and Harry Charles, both of whom, the band expressed, "have been instrumental in honing the Foley sound," the bulk of the songs were recorded during a songwriting retreat on Waiheke Island. Allowing the location itself to be "the extra member of the band," Ash and Gabe felt they were able to write freely, letting their production and songwriting processes be influenced by the stunning weather and the charm of their environment.
"We truly let ourselves loose on these songs. That experience allowed us to tap into the duality that Foley has always been known for; vulnerability and honesty at times that feels raw and at the surface; paired with fun, free, light hearted tongue in cheek songs that have you bouncing along in the car… It felt important to us to write our sophomore album in a short amount of time so it feels like a slice of time in our lives. Already looking back on that year it's an incredible feeling to have it immortalised in an album where we can track how we felt in each moment and experience that came our way." FOLEY
