SOME RELIEF FOR PMS...brought to you by Dejour Tampons

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) can occur up to 14 days before the period starts and goes by the time the period finishes. Nearly all women suffer premenstrual symptoms, but PMS occurs when the symptoms interfere with daily life.

There are many theories as to causes. Changes in the levels of hormones associated with the menstrual cycle being the main one. PMS is often worsened by stressful situations at home and at work. The most common symptoms are anxiety, irritability, mood swings and tiredness. Women may also experience bloating, breast tenderness, weight gain, headaches and eating binges.

PMS can be treated with dietary supplements such as vitamin B6, magnesium, calcium and zinc. Evening Primrose Oil taken daily can reduce breast symptoms. Anti-depressants can be helpful for some.

The most important treatment is attention to lifestyle. Such things as planning less heavy schedules at the time of PMS, getting a good nights sleep and exercising regularly. Also small frequent meals, decreased sugar and salt intake, and avoiding alcohol, tobacco and caffeine may also be helpful. Pharmacy medications can be used to relieve pain and premenstrual migraines.

It is important to see a doctor to make sure there are no other reasons for the symptoms you feel. For more information contact your doctor or Family Planning Clinic.
