Jenny Mitchell Travelling Bones

Jenny Mitchell Travelling Bones

Speaking about her new release, 'Travelling Bones', Jenny Mitchell says it 'feels like the perfect way to close the chapter of my little album.' And by little album she is, of course, referring to Wildfires, which not only peaked at #1 on the Alternative Album NZ iTunes Chart and #3 on the Official NZ Music Charts, but also saw Mitchell crowned as the 2019 Recorded music Country Artist of the Year.

'It was written in a Sydney motel while reflecting on a whirlwind year,' says Mitchell, 'and born out of that nostalgic feeling of loving travel while also missing home.' It's an all-too-familiar feeling, not only for musicians but also anyone who has left home in search of adventure. There's always that question in the back of one's mind: am I doing the right thing?

For Mitchell, the answer is yes. 'I'm so fortunate to tour and see places I probably wouldn't see otherwise,' she says, 'and this track is a stripped back, honest song that reflects on all the adventures I've had along the way.' It was recorded with Matt Fell at Love HZ Studio in Sydney while the video was produced by Acorn Photography & Cinema in Dunedin. 'I loved working with them on Let Me Be, my last single, and I knew they would be the perfect team to put this story together.'

It also helped that Acorn are based in Dunedin, the city that Mitchell has lived and studied in for the past three years. 'They know all the best local treasures,' she says, resulting in a touching video showcasing life through the eyes of a travelling New Zealand musician, as well as the country's jaw-dropping natural beauty.

Mitchell has toured through Australia, New Zealand and Europe – both solo and with artists including Luke O'Shea and Tami Neilson – and was scheduled to perform at Top Paddock Festival in NZ and the National Folk Festival in Australia before travel restrictions were implemented. Despite the disruption, she's looking forward to bringing 'Travelling Bones' and other tracks from Wildfires to her homeland and across the Tasman as soon as possible. As she sings, 'I've gotta pack these bags, I've got places to be, good luck to any boy who tries to stop these wandering feet.'
