Premier online education resource, LiteracyPlanet, has officially launched LiteracyPlanet Word Mania 2015 and is calling on primary school children around Australia to exercise their literacy skills and help reach the goal of 10 million minutes of literacy development.

LiteracyPlanet Word Mania 2015 is a word building competition involving an online game where players build as many words as possible using 15 letter tiles in three minutes. It is free for all children to play, and the competition is open to children in Years 1 to 6.

LiteracyPlanet CEO, Adam McArthur, said the company was excited to get Australia's children involved in a collective and fun literacy challenge; 'Our goal is to provide a learning experience that's fun, engaging and effective. With LiteracyPlanet Word Mania we have set a great challenge for primary schoolers to improve their literacy skills and work together to build millions of words and play 10 million minutes of literacy online. We're confident they'll reach this collective goal while also improving their individual literacy skills."

Word Mania is much more than a spelling competition. Word building involves a range of literacy skills including using basic language units like affixes and plurals (morphemes), spelling, word recognition, vocabulary and word knowledge.

LiteracyPlanet Ambassador, Georgie Gardner, said she was looking forward to seeing how children around Australia rise to the challenge; 'I am passionate about child literacy development and this competition provides a great incentive, as well as a really fun and easy way, for children all around Australia to practise their literacy skills."

LiteracyPlanet Word Mania 2015 is open for practise now and the competition starts in Term 3, on July 27. It is accessible to any child who has a school or home LiteracyPlanet login, through the web version or the LiteracyPlanet Word Mania Apps on tablet and mobile.

Every game played contributes three minutes to the national total. A counter on the website shows how many minutes have been played overall and how much progress has been made towards the national goal. An added incentive is more than $50,000 in prizes for children and their schools.

A national final involving the 10 highest scoring players from around Australia will take place in Sydney on September 3, during National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2015.
