Miss Nine Interview

Miss Nine was born in Germany as Kristin Schrot and at the age of 16, she started her career – not as a DJ, but as a model. Shortly thereafter, she secured a worldwide contract with Elite Model Management.

After moving to Amsterdam, she discovered the art of DJ'ing and her passion for music eventually led her to become a DJ as well. In 2003, only a few months after touching the decks for the first time, she became a resident DJ at the legendary Motion parties where she evolved as an artist and DJ while playing alongside masters such as John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Nick Warren and James Zabiela.

2003 was also the year that Miss Nine took to the decks as the youngest artist at the 10th edition of Dance Valley (renowned Dutch Dance Festival). At the end of 2005, Miss Nine was then asked by Grammy Award winning DJ duo, Deep Dish to join Bullitt Bookings, the reputable agency of A-list DJs.

This allowed Miss Nine to enter the forefront of the international DJ scene for the first time.

In 2008, Miss Nine started her own record label called 925 Digital. Having spent so much time in the dance scene, she realised that there were too many excellent progressive-house tracks that didn't get the release and the attention that they deserved. 925 Digital was created in order to ensure that this didn't happen and bring progressive house, and the artists behind it, to prominence. Miss Nine performs all around the globe, spinning at clubs such as Privilege in Ibiza, Avalon in Los Angeles, Warung in Brazil, the Ministry of Sound in London and several Pacha's around the world. She has also graced the main stage of the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, joining a line-up of, among others, Tiësto and David Guetta.

Nine Sessions is Miss Nine's monthly radio show which is broadcasted in more than 35 countries, including DI.fm, Proton, Frisky and Dance Paradise. Since January 2011, Nine Sessions is also available as a podcast on iTunes. During this one-hour show, Miss Nine shares her favourite tracks of the moment with her listeners.

Meanwhile in 2010, Miss Nine's modeling career soared along with cross promotions and sponsorship opportunities. Miss Nine became the ambassador of the revolutionary Levi's® Curve ID line. To draw even more attention to this new line, she mixed the compilation album Levi's® Curve ID. In addition to spinning at numerous events, which are actively being promoted in Europe and Asia, Miss Nine also hosted Levi's® presents Miss Nine in the Supperclub during the Amsterdam Dance Event in October of 2010. Miss Nine is also now the face of Pioneer for their new Pioneer 350 series, turntables that are meant for amateur DJs. As part of a European-wide promotional campaign, video clips in which Miss Nine is demonstrating these turntables are being televised on MTV.

Interview with Miss Nine

Question: What inspired you to begin DJing?

Miss Nine: My boyfriend was the inspiration to it all. He was DJing for a few years and asked me if I would like to give it a go, so I did and what started out as a hobby quickly become a career. It's incredible how far it's gone from those first few spins on the decks.

Question: How did modelling help your DJ career?

Miss Nine: Maybe you get a little bit more opportunity coming from a modelling background but at the same time you have to prove you can really DJ, otherwise people soon realise you're not there for the music. I've always been passionate about the music and DJing is a why I can combine that love with the dancefloor.

Question: What's your inspiriting when creating tracks?

Miss Nine: I am working in a team which involves different producers and we collaborate on ideas and new sounds which then go into making a track. When you are DJing you get inspired a lot as you can see the crowd reacting on certain music/samples/vocals etc, so it's good to come back from the club and get those ideas down and then when back in the studio bring them to life. I like to put a lot of emotion in my work so use my own experiences, when on the road or learning about new cultures etc, to give my music a richer feeling.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Miss Nine: It can be anything. I love music in all forms and seek to find something a like in whatever genre. My view is there must be something good in every kind of musical genre as someone somewhere likes it enough that exists; its exploring new sounds and styles which excites me.

Question: What do you enjoy most about performing in Australia?

Miss Nine: I have only been in Australia once, so that's difficult to say. But I am looking forward to it because it is just one of the most stunning countries on the planet and the people have an amazing spirit about them, which is great for a dancefloor.

Question: Why did you decide to start 925 Digital?

Miss Nine: It's is now called 925 Music. 925 digital is a sublabel as well is 925 global. I started it because I just wanted to work with a lot of producers out there who I felt were really good but often overlooked, so my goal is to try to help them to get more publicity through my label.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Miss Nine: I enjoy being creative in the studio and working on new ideas but my first passion will always be DJing. I love the thrill you get connecting with the crowd. It is an incredible feeling seeing the reactions of different tracks as you build your set up through the night. If I've been in the studio working on something for a long period of time I can't wait to road test it on the dancefloor and see the feedback from the audience.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Miss Nine: My boyfriend gently pushed me into it and I loved it instantly. I'm so grateful he encouraged me to pick up the headphones and live out my dream in music.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Miss Nine: Breaking people's perceptions that I am booked because of my modelling background. It's been a hard road, as any aspiring DJ will tell you, but it's been a great journey so far and one that has taught me a lot. I feel I've earned my badges to be where I am within my career and have had so many promoters, artists and labels put great faith in me over the years. I work very hard and have many goals I hope to achieve with the top of the ice berg being to get booked in the biggest clubs and to become one of the key players in the world.

Question: What's a typical day like, for you?

Miss Nine: When I am not touring. Humm, it varies a lot but commonly its wake up, healthy breakfast, check some emails and my twitter etc, go through lots of music (promo's I get from producers/artists), do some sports and then back to work again before having a rest in the evening and then an eight hour sleep at least.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Miss Nine: Sia is on my wishlist! Can you hook me up, she from Australia right?

Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?

Miss Nine: www.facebook.com/missnine and www.miss-nine.com

Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Miss Nine: 1. Water, drink it all day long and every day
2. Sleep 7/8 hours a night
3. Do sports at least 3 times a week
4. Eat healthy food (fruits / vegetables)
5. Be a happy human being and smile every day

Question: What is the story behind the name Miss Nine?

Miss Nine: I was born on the 9th of March, it's my lucky number and my nickname in Germany was Nine when I was younger. So it felt right to go with Nine as it was something I'm already used too.
