Adelaide's most lovable overthinkers, The Tullamarines, return with their most emotionally raw and melodically addictive single yet, Lying. Drenched in sunny, 90s pop-inspired instrumentation and layered with lyrical vulnerability, Lying explores the quiet battles with self-worth, performance anxiety, and the masks we wear to get through it all. Underneath jangly guitars and shimmering choruses lies a song that cuts deep tapping into the insecurities that so often accompany the creative process, while still finding light in the chaos. It's a track that walks the line between melancholy and euphoria, offering catharsis for anyone who's ever felt not quite good enough, and comfort in knowing they're not alone.
Following the success of Running On Empty, which earned full triple j rotation and became the station's most-played song earlier this year, Lying continues the band's signature approach of tackling internal chaos with warmth, energy, and vulnerability.
Cram four perennial over-thinkers into a Tarntanya/Adelaide jam room, sprinkle in some love, care, anxiety, and affection, and you get The Tullamarines. Josh, Angus, Benny, and Lucinda first connected on the local gig circuit and bonded over their shared love of songwriting. Now a bunch of inseparable nervous wrecks, they bring high-energy catharsis to every live show and track, capturing a unique blend of earnest emotion and fizzy indie-pop optimism.
"'Lying' is about insecurity, imposter syndrome, self-loathing, and the effort to do better. That feeling of people leaving before we perform is a running joke, but it comes from real doubt. We struggle with confidence in our music, image-everything. So we said exactly how we felt, but wrapped it in sunny, 90s pop-inspired sounds. It's sad-happy. Sometimes it's easier to pretend you're okay than to be vulnerable. We hope this song helps people feel seen and encourages real conversations."
Their distinctive sound has seen them grace festival stages and tour nationally with the likes of TOWNS, Stumps, Dear Seattle, and Polish Club, and share the stage with icons like Alex Lahey, The Buoys, and Teenage Joans.
2025 has been their biggest year yet. Running On Empty not only landed them #1 most-played on triple j, but also full rotation on the station, and editorial support across Spotify (New Music Friday AU & NZ, Indie Arrivals, Local Noise, Fresh Finds AU & NZ), Apple Music (Good Times, New Music Daily) and TikTok's viral playlist. The single garnered press love from Good Call Live, Hi Fi Way, Aus Music Scene, The Note, and The Happy Mag.
The momentum continues with upcoming national support for Dice, Old Mervs, The Preatures, and Ball Park Music, and a stacked release calendar that positions Lying as just the next exciting chapter in their breakout year.
