Long Play: White Material

Venue:ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne
Date:'Friday 14 January - Wednesday 2 February'
Acclaimed auteur Claire Denis returns to her childhood home of Africa to explore notions of belonging and identity against the backdrop of a nation fractured by colonialism and civil war.

At the core of this superbly crafted story is Maria Vialle (Isabelle Huppert), a coffee plantation matriarch who fails to acknowledge the shifting sands that will embroil herself and her family in a bloody conflict.Infused with another magical score by Tindersticks (Denis' long-time collaborators), White Material features the hallucinatory marriage of sound and image that is the director's trademark, drawing the viewer into an astonishing elliptical narrative. Denis marshals her ensemble cast with aplomb, but it is Huppert's Maria - a perfectly nuanced mix of understated tension and steely resolve - that drives the ever-present suspense in this masterful cinematic experience.

Shows like Press Gang and Degrassi Junior High reflected the issues that young people faced in a way that wasn't condescending or preachy. They are remembered with fondness and discussed amongst peers with a reverence, passion and joy that is rarely so widely shared.

In our Nineties Nostalgia special, Josh Kinal and John Richards from the Boxcutters TV commentary podcast will investigate just what made these shows so unique and enduringly popular.

They'll be asking questions like: How many people working in publishing and journalism were influenced by Lynda Day? And why is it impossible to see a hipster wearing a hat and not think of Joey Jeremiah?

In addition to the new online store, Salvos Stores has also increased its product range to include new household items including toiletries and cleaning products. Both developments are in response to increasing consumer demand for easily accessible quality goods at affordable prices.

Kirrily Johnston's Top Five Shopping with a Conscience tips:

1. New items are donated to Salvos Stores daily, so make sure you visit your local store or check online regularly to see what's come in!

2.Green is the new black, so check out your local Salvos Store for pre-loved furniture that you can restore in your own personal style instead of buying new.

3.Shout about your Salvos Stores find! Why not support Salvos Stores by becoming a fan of Salvos Stores Facebook page, and show off your best buy to the other fans.

4.Shopping solo can be lonely, so celebrate Shopping with a Conscience month by taking your friends with you to your local Salvos Store. Spice up the trip by setting a $20 limit, and see who can walk away with the best discovery of the day.

5. Use your imagination when considering a pre-loved item; think about what it will look like in a different setting - like your own wardrobe!

National Water Week

Nubian's top tips for reducing your water use: without having to go without!

Stop leaks: If you can hear a leaking tap or toilet then it is time to fix it. Often all that's needed is a new washer - and you could be saving thousands of litres of drinking water that are otherwise wasted per day.

Covert to a water-efficient dishwasher: The best dishwashers have highly effective spray systems and use water efficiently during the wash and rinse cycles - these new efficient models reportedly use about the same water as washing by hand.

Save water in the shower: Install a water-efficient showerhead. Water-efficient 'AAA' showerheads use less than 9 litres of water per minute, compared to a normal showerhead that uses 25 litres per minute.

Garden smarts: Choose native plants that don't need much water and are suitable to your garden, install a drip irrigation system and use plenty of mulch to reduce evaporation and weed growth.

Recycle your greywater: As much as 60% of the water you flush down the drain can be recycled. Greywater - that is, water from bathroom sinks, showers and the laundry - can be reused in toilet flushing and laundries as well as external applications such as above ground irrigation and car washing.
