Sympathy for the Devil

Venue:ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne
Date:'12th - 30th of May'
Novelle Vague iconoclast Jean-Luc Godard relocated briefly to London post the May '68 riots in Paris and set about making a film to "subvert all civilised values" (The Observer). The result is a countercultural mash-up of music and politics as Godard cuts between takes of the Rolling Stones recording the classic track (in which Jagger-as-Lucifer surveys the spoils of history) and staged scenes of young revolutionaries (who are intent on making their own).

In scripted set pieces, Godard explores the limits of language as a revolutionary force. Militant black activists spout ideological rhetoric while a winsome neophyte feminist, Eve Democracy (Godard's then wife, Anne Wiazemsky) provides yes/no answers to a film crew interviewing her in a bucolic setting.

The director's long, luxuriant tracking shots inside the Stones' recording studio observe the band reworking and recording the now-classic Beggars Banquet track, Sympathy for the Devil. These scenes are political in their own way, tellingly revealing the pecking order within the Stones' own power structure. As Erich Kuersten wrote in his 2009 essay, Postcards from Hell, Jagger and Keith Richards "rule like roosters".

Booking:Thebutterflyclub.com, tickets also available at the door.
Fiona Della Ca and Kellie Higgins are Kelfi & Fikel (Slide Cabaret Festival, Canal Cafe Theatre UK), a quirky new musical comedy duo.

Their original songs and sketches are irreverent, crude and unapologetic. You can\'t help but laugh, blush, or at least tap your foot as they team up their warped characters in off-the-wall scenarios.

With Higgins at the piano, their beautiful voices wonderfully compliment each other, so, despite whatever profanities or obscenities might be coming out of their mouths, they are at least easy on the ear.

Kelfi & Fikel have been likened to French and Saunders, the Mighty Boosh, Cook and Moore, and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie on acid. The relationship between Della Ca & Higgins (real-life friends since primary school) is unpredictable, daring and a joy to behold.

If you enjoy a character-based, naughty cabaret, with more one-liners than you can poke a stick at, come and check out the uniquely twisted perspective of Kelfi & Fikel in their Melbourne Comedy Festival debut.

Screenwise Film & Television School is bringing one of Los Angeles' most sought after Casting Directors, Tamara Hunter, to Sydney, for a one-day master intensive, in August.

This is a chance for Australian actors to be seen by the world class casting director behind hit movies such as TRON: Legacy, Iron Man 1 & 2, Kick-Ass, Captain America, Cowboys and Aliens, and recently Safe House and The Avengers, starring Australia's own Chris Hemsworth.

Denise Roberts, founder and CEO of Screenwise, states, 'Acting is the easy part...getting seen by the right people? Now that's hard. We have a plethora of incredible talent here, and Screenwise will continue to do it's utmost to help them make that difficult transition from Domestic to International'.
