All Year Round Interview

Adelaide's All Year Round are fast making their way to the forefront of Australia's pop/rock scene.

Set to release their debut EP 'In Perspective" on March 30th, the 'young and energetic" five-piece, all primed in their youth, have already established themselves as a band causing 'an uproar of excitement in the local scene," as described on Tumblr.

Forming in mid-2012 and performing predominantly in and around Adelaide venues, All Year Round are about to break the South Australian border and head to Australia's East Coast for a tour to launch 'In Perspective" playing shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and hometown Adelaide in April. 'We love being on stage and performing music to a lively crowd," says guitarist Paul Bakker.

Through a shared passion for music, Drummer George Solomon and Guitarist Paul Bakker first met in high school where they begun to start writing their own original songs. In completing the lineup, the pair met Jacqueline Kyriacou, Luke Lutze and Josh Dickenson. In the search for a name of the band, it was a literal hit in the face for Paul and George after a newsletter bearing the headline 'All Year Round" was thrown their direction and 'from then on, it stuck".

The band have been turning heads since their formation earning a legion of fans after supporting the likes of fellow pop-rockers All Time Low, These Kids wear Crowns, Hands Like Houses and Masketta Fall and performing to over 30,000 at Elder Park's New Years Eve festival.

Recorded at Sydney's Electric Sun studios with producer Dave Petrovic (Tonight Alive / Northlane / Dream On Dreamer) behind the helm, 'In Perspective" is an open book to the trials and tribulations of the bands life experiences infused with influence from the likes of Simple Plan, A Day To Remember, Fall Out Boy, Taylor Swift and Mayday Parade.

'Before we went in to the studio, we sat down as a group and discussed where we wanted to go with our music careers and how far we want to take it, you could say we put everything into perspective which gave birth to the EP's title".

Lead single 'Larry" paints a picture of a love triangle between his controlling and infidel girlfriend of which he is blinded by; and his female best friend, who bears an initially unreciprocated love with him and who periodically warns him of his girlfriend's ways. 'When the relationship does fail after the girlfriend was caught cheating Larry then realises his best friend had been there all along and he did in fact have feelings for her albeit being too late as she'd moved on having also realized he doesn't appreciate her and she is better off without him".

All Year Round are:
Jacqueline Kyriacou – Vocals
George Solomon – Drums
Paul Bakker – Guitar
Luke Lutze – Guitar
Josh Dickenson – Bass

Interview with Paul Bakker

Question: What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming tour?

Paul Bakker: We are so excited as this is our first ever tour!
We are definitely looking forward most to meeting a range of new fans.

Question: How would you describe your music?

Paul Bakker: Our music is very energetic and fun, we try and write our tunes so that when people hear them they are able to sing and dance along!

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Paul Bakker: Yes we write our own songs. Many of us are inspired by different bands while writing the music side, but with the lyric side of our songs we are inspired by things that happen in our lives and our friends and family's lives.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Paul Bakker: We all listen to a range of different music from Taylor Swift to Fall Out Boy, A Day To Remember, AC/DC, All Time Low and the list goes on!

We try to have a wide variety of songs that we listen too.

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Paul Bakker: After the tour and the hype of our Debut EP 'In Perspective" dies down, we will definitely be looking into playing more interstate shows, accompanied by a new single and looking into making our way to the States.

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Paul Bakker: As a band we have had our little arguments as anyone does, but none of us have ever contemplated throwing it all in. We love music and each of us will be happy to be writing songs, and touring for the rest of our lives.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Paul Bakker: We all can never decide which we like better, both performing live and recording have such amazing feelings to doing them. Being able to watch all your music come together in a studio and playing a show to your fans that scream the words back at you!

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Paul Bakker: George and I played music together throughout high school with a huge inspiration from their music teacher Pedro Ferreria and a huge support from their families. Jacqueline and Luke's passion for music came from their parents and growing up around music and live bands. And finally Josh who just loved music, loves going to as many live shows as possible and listening to music.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Paul Bakker: We have plenty of challenges that we were faced with when writing this EP and planning our first tour. Things like trying to budget everything on a low budget and finding a balance between a good price and a professional outcome.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Paul Bakker: For most of us we have full time jobs, so waking up early going to work and then either going to band practice at night times or spending time working on music, sending emails and spending time with our friends, family and each other.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Paul Bakker: Being able to work with so many knowledgeable and nice people who are really keen to help us better our skills and being able to make so many new friends with all of our fans.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Paul Bakker: If we had a choice we would love to work with Patrick Stump (singer of Fall Out Boy). He has such an amazing voice and we love the way Fall Out Boy write songs.

Question: What message would you like your music to say to your fans?

Paul Bakker: We have written a few songs that definitely push the message to be what you want to be in life and not to let people bully you and push you around.

Question: What is the story behind the band's name?

Paul Bakker: Our bands name literally smacked George and I in the face when one of their classmates threw a newsletter at them with the headline 'All Year Round". This happened while they were searching for a band name and it stuck ever since.
