Cool Aussie aunts and uncles to spend $313m this Christmas
LEGO Australia reveal the effort aunts and uncles go to please their nieces and nephews at Christmas

Research from LEGO® Australia has found Aussie aunts and uncles are desperate to be seen as 'cool', splashing $313m1 on Christmas presents for their nieces and nephews.

Far from being the season to be merry, the 'need to nail it' is giving aunts and uncles anxiety, with more than half (56 per cent) worrying about choosing gifts. The fear of present shame means 61 per cent say they feel pressure from their niece or nephew to give a 'cool' gift.

Haunted by the ghosts of presents past, 47 per cent of Aussie aunts and uncles have had their niece or nephew say they don't like their gifts, causing them to spend a total of 46,287,2951 hours shopping in an attempt to find the perfect Christmas presents.

This seasonal stress is leading many aunts and uncles (89 per cent) to admit they would rather do household chores like taking out the bins (12 per cent) and cleaning the bathroom (14 per cent) than go Christmas shopping for their nieces and nephews.

Nieces and nephews are festive favourites as family, friends and siblings take a back seat, with most Christmas spending going on nieces and nephews (32 per cent), second only to partners (34 per cent). In fact, more than a third of aunts (37 per cent) admit to spending more on their nieces and nephews than on their partners.

Other key findings include:
• Pester power: young aunts and uncles (aged 18 to 23 years) are hit the hardest, with 81 per cent feeling pressured by their niece or nephew to give cool gifts at Christmas.
• Giftfailophobia: Millennials are most likely to suffer from giftfailophobia, the fear of gift rejection, as more than half (54 per cent) admit their niece or nephew has told them they don't like their gift in the past.
• Generation stingy: Bad news for those with older aunts and uncles, as a fifth of baby boomers (21 per cent) say they spend nothing on Christmas presents.
• Splashing the cash: 43 per cent of aunts and uncles confessing to overspending on gifts.

• Dedication to perfection: Only the best will do for the 80 per cent of aunts and uncles who spend up to 10 hours tracking down the perfect present.
• Clueless at Christmas: aunts and uncles are desperately seeking gift advice with many (56 per cent) turning to their siblings. Other sources of inspiration are browsing the shops (45 per cent), online shopping (32 per cent), asking other kids (23 per cent), finding what's trending on social media (21 per cent) and gift guides (19 per cent).

Want to be the cool aunt or uncle this Christmas? Actress and aunt to four nieces and a nephew under 5 years old, Sam Frost, shares her shopping tips:
"Being an aunty has a special place in my heart, but when it comes to Christmas, I can spend hours shopping and searching for the perfect gift. I have beautiful memories of having a passion for LEGO as a child, so I can't wait to see my niece's face light up as she opens her present this year. For aunts and uncles stuck this Christmas, LEGO is the perfect solution; it's the gift of imagination – so you really can't get it wrong!" says Sam.

Give the gift of imagination this Christmas; LEGO is available from all good retailers.
