D Minor and Zeek Power Collaborate To Deliver Powerful New Single 'Homerun'

2019 Australia's Got Talent semi-finalist, D Minor blew Australian audiences away this year with his powerful and emotive rendition of his hit single 'Concrete Pillow' a song about the dark and hard times he spent living on the streets that featured American singer-songwriter, Alli Simpson.

Bringing the audience and judge Nicole Scherzinger to tears, D Minor went on to connect with fans around the globe with his performance hitting in excess of 11 million views worldwide.

His new single, 'Homerun' is equally emotive, continuing his journey he now celebrates where his life is at today whilst continuing to recognise where he has come from and the challenges he has faced over the years whilst homeless. D Minor remains connected to the streets and is an incredible ambassador and voice for the homeless youth around Australia and the world.

Now, with the past firmly behind him, he strives to reach his goals through his music and is set to make his mark with 'Homerun'. Partnering with Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD) he has also collaborated with guest vocalist, Zeek Power, finalist on The Voice in 2019 under the mentorship of Kelly Rowland on this new single.

'I love what D Minor stands for and the hurdles he has overcome. When I heard the song and was asked to be a part of it, I did not hesitate to create such an inspirational song with him' - Zeek Power

D Minor is continuing to encourage the younger generation to not lose sight of their goals and to follow their dreams despite their situation. He will be embarking on a 50-school and homeless venue tour run around Australia as an ambassador for MMAD with the intention to mentor 10 young people to overcome homelessness.

'This song is really important to me, it represents strength and courage against adversity and overcoming really tough times. I want others to know they should never give up, I'm living proof that you can get through the dark days' – D Minor

With more than 115,000 Australian's enduring homelessness in just five years since 2011, D Minor has committed 50% of all publishing proceeds for 'Homerun' to be directed back to MMAD to help those suffering from this devastating issue. He aims to raise $100,000 to help reach 50,000 young people going through similar struggles.

Interview with D Minor

Question: Can you tell us about Homerun?

D Minor: Homerun is an anthem I wrote for myself. It's a song that rolls off from my last debut single Concrete Pillow, I basically wrote this song as a reminder for anyone going through a storm, to pick yourself up and keep moving forward. No matter how hard life gets its a reminder to stand tall and hit that Homerun.

Question: What inspired the collaboration with Zeek Power?

D Minor: After watching and hearing Zeek on The Voice and hearing the power behind it, I knew he would be a perfect fit for the song. The chorus was written by Conrad Sewell and handed too Zeek to record. After reaching out to his management he flew down from Queensland and we got into the studio to record Homerun.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

D Minor: My motivation comes from life experiences and what I've had to endure in life. I love to create music that is relatable, authentic and speaks from the heart. I went through a tough childhood growing, I experienced homelessness, I shuffled between foster home and refugees, it was hard going through life at this age but I feel like the hardest upbringing makes the strongest person. I then turned all the pain and struggle towards my music and expressed it through writing lyrics. Writing lyrics was like therapy for me, it helped me survive.

Question: What did you learn during your time on Australia's Got Talent?

D Minor: I learnt to stay focused and keep my dreams in vision. It was an amazing experience and I learn't so much from behind the scenes to how a TV show works to be able to share a message with the world and have my story and music reach the eyes and ears of so many people across the globe. I guess it also helped me bring my dream into reality, I saw the bigger picture of where I want my music to take me in life.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

D Minor: Both of these experiences are amazing. Firstly being able to stand out on a stage with lights and a microphone and connect with an audience is an amazing experience. But also being in the studio writing and recording is a whole other experience, I love the process of starting from nothing and creating a piece of work that starts building in time. But I have to go with performing live as I feel such a rush mixed with nerves, adrenaline and excitement just before stepping out on stage.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

D Minor: My favourite song to perform is a song I wrote called Concrete Pillow, the reason for this is that it speaks a lot to me. I feel every lyric I perform. I wrote this song about experiencing homelessness from the age of 11, sleeping next to bakeries for warmth and using the concrete as a pillow. I feel like so many young people can relate to struggle and this song speaks a lot about my life.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
D Minor: Right now I'm listening to a lot of Nipsey Hussle, I love this passion and what he stood for. I'm also listening to Ace Hood and Dave East right now. I basically listen to anyone who is sharing their story through music.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

D Minor: I guess growing up Eminem played a big role inspiring me through his music and story and I wanted to do the same. But their were so many more artist that inspired me, from hearing how that twisted words to make lyrics and how they bended sentences to make it flow really stood out to me and played a big part in me chasing my dream.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

D Minor: I would love to collaborate with an artist called 6lack. I feel like my flow mixed with his style of music would sound great. I love collaborating with a lot of different artists, especially from different genres. I love experimenting and see what can be created in the studio.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

D Minor: I guess the biggest challenge is continuing to find the motivation, sometimes when the music is going slow and you're not earning a living from it, you can find yourself getting down a bit. But in saying that I have a lot of passion and drive to chase the music so it's very rare that I lose motivation. I feel like it's important to do what you love in life and that's exactly what I am doing.

Question: What's a typical day like?

D Minor: A typical day for me is wake up, get in some fitness. I then get out of the way all the admin and work side of things for the day, I then hit the studio to write, record or whatever is required for that day.
