Joan & the Giants are ready to break your heart and stitch it back together again, with the release of their emotionally candid and hopeful new single 'Mamma Don't Cry' out today. Listen HERE.
Lyrically, the song captures the emotional moment frontwoman Grace Newton-Wordsworth confided in her mother about an abusive relationship. "We'd gone for coffee in Fremantle, and that's when I finally told her what I had been through," Grace reflects. "She broke down in tears, heartbroken that I hadn't told her while it was happening. But the truth is, when you're in it, you don't really tell anyone. It takes every ounce of strength just to stop excusing it"and even more to finally walk away."
Grace's sweet vibrato transforms heartbreaking moments into hope, as she recounts moving into a sharehouse with three strangers after leaving the relationship, and the deep connection she developed with them on her healing journey: 'They took my baggage and I cried on their shoulders / I've never known a love like this that comes with no conditions / I've never known safety or a house with no screaming.'
Co-produced by Joel Quartermain (G Flip, Oh Pep, Meg Mac) and Edwin White (Vance Joy, Amy Shark, Jack River), 'Mamma Don't Cry' is a story of strength and metamorphosis. "It came from a time when I discovered just how strong I really was"and I'm proud of that. I felt like a butterfly leaving the cocoon, slowly finding freedom, peace, and a sense of self again." 'Mamma Don't Cry' comes just ahead of Joan & the Giants' upcoming stint in the UK next month, where they are set to perform at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. The magnetic alt-pop rock group have plans to record new music while abroad, and will return ready to hit the ground running with plenty of live shows set to be announced in the coming months, including a Tuesday night residency at Fitzroy's Old Bar throughout August.
