Following his recent singles'Mona Lisa Money', 'Seaside Wishes','Clementine', and 'We Still Happened', acclaimed New Zealand–raised singer-songwriter MACEY returns with his poignant new single 'Call It Even', out now via FiveAM / Warner Music New Zealand. Listen HERE.
Lifted from his forthcoming sophomore album ONCE, due Friday 3 July, 'Call It Even' captures the painful beauty of trying to leave a relationship with grace - honouring what once was while accepting that some connections aren't meant to last forever. Driven by warm indie-pop instrumentation, nostalgic melodies and MACEY's signature lyrical vulnerability, the track balances heartbreak with maturity, reflecting on love without resentment.
"We talked about our parents and what they did wrong. How we got in this position and hate what we've become," MACEY sings in the opening verse, setting the tone for a deeply personal conversation between two people struggling to let go. The emotional centrepiece arrives in the chorus: "You gave me comfort, I gave you purpose. So let's keep it decent, at least on the surface. We made it to summer, our final season. So let's call it even."
Speaking on the song, MACEY explains,"I wrote this song just after my first big breakup, while my dad was also really sick. It was a heavy time in my life, and Josh and Ryan were the perfect people to help me process everything and reflect through music. The song is about recognising how much we gave to each other and how much we grew together - that there wasn't really anyone to blame or be angry at. We both did our best, loved as deeply as we could, and eventually it came to an end. We were making mistakes and making magic at the same time. At its core, it's a love letter to first love, and a final goodbye."
Written during sessions between New Zealand and London, 'Call It Even' continues the vivid storytelling world MACEY has crafted across ONCE - an album inspired by the countless lives and characters he encountered while travelling through the city on the London tube.
"With this album, it feels like I'm looking at everything from a more mature and reflective place rather than reactive," MACEY says. "I was observing every little thing - every interaction, every character from every walk of life. Naturally, I started writing stories inspired by what I was seeing, as well as my own experiences."
Blending elements of indie-rock, folk, soul and Brit-pop, ONCE marks a bold evolution for MACEY as both a songwriter and storyteller. Across the album's ten tracks, he explores themes of love, loss, grief, capitalism, identity and human connection through a lens that feels both cinematic and deeply intimate. Pre-save HERE. To celebrate the release of ONCE, MACEY will headline Auckland's iconic The Tuning Fork on July 3 - the same day the album arrives worldwide. Renowned for his intimate and emotionally charged live performances, the special hometown headline show will mark MACEY's biggest headline performance to date and bring the world of ONCE to life on stage for the very first time.
