Interview with Anouska Jones

Question: What inspired you to write Spirit?

Anouska Jones: I'm a confirmed animal lover and on my small rural property I have two dogs, a cat and three horses. It was my cat who inspired my first book in this style, Meow, as there are so many great quotes about cats by both famous and not-so-famous people and so many wonderful images, that it seemed an obvious step to pair them up to create a book for cat lovers. People really loved Meow, so that was followed by Woof, and then I felt I couldn't leave my horses out, so I had to do Spirit!

Question: When creating Spirit, what audience did you have in mind?

Anouska Jones: People like me! Animal lovers in general, but also all those people who respond particularly to horses " whether that's a little girl riding her first pony or a stockman who's lived his life in the saddle.


Question: Can you share your earliest horse memory with us?

Anouska Jones: I must have been about five and I was patting the nose of the Shetland pony in the field next door to my house while feeding him a carrot when he decided to nip me on the chest! Clearly I hadn't been fast enough with the next piece of carrot! I remember screaming, dropping the rest of the carrot and running back to my mum. Despite that, I was clearly hooked on ponies, as that little Shetland and I became friends and he even used to take me for the occasional ride.


Question: How did you go about collating horse-related quotes for the book?

Anouska Jones: Many hours of research on the internet and in books.
