Interview with Colin Shewan

Question: What inspired you to write The Adventures of Benny the World's Smartest Jack Russel?

Colin Shewan: Benny is my own dog he is a Jack Russel and I take him for walks every morning and every evening and while I am walking him I dream up all these stories which is what inspired me to write The Adventures of Benny the World's Smartest Jack Russel.

Question: Why did you decide to donate part of the proceeds from this book to SPCA?

Colin Shewan: I have always believed in the good work that the SPCA do and I belong to Lions International where we donate money to SPCA every six months. I would also like to contribute to SPCA personally because I know what a great job they do.

Question: What will The Adventures of Benny the World's Smartest Jack Russell teach children?

Colin Shewan: I think in a way The Adventures of Benny the World's Smartest Jack Russell will teach children the difference between right and wrong and I have also used fairly big words in some of the stories which could improve their English. I hope that The Adventures of Benny the World's Smartest Jack Russell will motivate children to become decent citizens.

I have four children and I have always loved reading to them, especially at bed time and also during the day when I had time; I have always had the ambition to write a children's book.

Question: Could you tell us a little bit about your first book, Saxophonists Have More Fun?

Colin Shewan: I started out as a professional musician and when I say professional I was working by day as a cabinet maker and working at night as a saxophonist and clarinet player - it was a great life. There were lots of funny incidents in my musical career that I wished to share with other people and that's what inspired me to write Saxophonists Have More Fun. I am still playing in three different bands now.
