Black Dog Institute Writing Competition

With nine per cent of expectant women and 16 per cent of new mothers suffering postnatal depression as well as one in 10 men, the Black Dog Institute, in its latest writing competition, is focusing the spotlight on their stories.

The Institute is looking to provide more answers to deal with the problem of mood disorders during a vulnerable two-year span that takes in the period of pregnancy, childbirth and the baby's first year.

The 2010/2011 essay competition is titled Postnatal Depression, Men and Women - Personal Experiences and the Search for Real Answers.

Over the past seven years, Professor Gordon Parker, Executive Director of Black Dog Institute, said that the writing competitions had focused on a wide range of topics such as adolescent depression, tackling mood disorders in the workplace, and mastering depression and bipolar disorder; resulting in the publication of five books by distinguished publishing companies.

An Evening with Pearl Goldman

Pearl Goldman was born in Bondi in 1918. In 1937 she won the Miss Bondi Surf Queen competition, which marked the start of her glamorous future. Through the media attention at this time she was spotted by Norman Lindsay, who wanted to paint her and she became the central figure in several of his most famous works such as The Amazons, Imperia and Gift to Venus. She also was launched into the exciting worlds of fashion and theatre.

With over 80,000 tickets sold in 2010, Sydney Comedy Festival has fast become one of the highlights of Sydney's cultural calendar. Running from 11 April till 7 May, the 2011 Festival promises it's most exciting and diverse program yet, with everything from stand up, cabaret, musical comedy and an expanded kids program.

Set in the papery chaos of an artist's studio, 2 Dimensional Life of Her is a richly imagined parallel world where everything that was thought to be still or flat, comes to life and becomes something else.

In a performance work comprising animation, drawing, puppetry, projection and paper, a story unfolds from the pages of a large paper landscape. Projected images and enhanced naturalistic soundscapes fill the space between and across the deceptively empty surfaces.

Charles Perrault: The Godfather of European Fairy Tales

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) presents Charles Perrault: The Godfather of European Fairy Tales a cinema program that explores four of Charles Perrault's most celebrated fairy tales thrugh the eyes of three significant French film directors: Jacques Demy, Olivier Dahan and Catherine Breillat.

Charles Perrault, born in Paris in 1628, is considered the founder of the fairytale genre, bringing together disparate oral traditions and publishing these stories in his landmark book, Stories or Tales of Past Times, with Morals in 1697. Perrault's most famous stories are still in print today and have been made into operas, ballets, plays, musicals, and films, both live-action and animation.

Sydney's emerging performers will showcase fresh, experimental performance in a new work called Unsettlings at PACT centre for emerging artists in Erskineville.

Twelve young artists in their early twenties are on the verge of completing PACT's Ensemble Program. Providing a unique opportunity for a group of emerging artists to engage with leading established practitioners, the program allows students to develop their skills as inter-disciplinary and experimental contemporary performance makers.

PACT Artistic Director Cat Jones says, "Successful applicants of the Ensemble program are given the opportunity to undertake professional and creative development and the guided creative development of a new work. The program includes physical and vocal training with professional artists culminating in a three week performance at PACT."

Featuring all twelve members of the Ensemble, their performance Unsettlings has been developed under the guidance of Cat and PACT's Associate Director Julie Vulcan. The Ensemble has undertaken dedicated sessions to develop and produce Unsettlings. These sessions were then complemented by intensive movement training with Chris Ryan and vocal training with Sophie Martin.

Highlights of the University of Melbourne Art Collection

A major mural painted in 1940 by one of Australia's finest mural artists, Napier Waller, is featured in the Highlights of the University of Melbourne Art Collection exhibition at the Potter Museum on until the 27 November 2011.

The mural, Australian Symbolic Figures, in two large panels, depicts the development of Australia's industry from the early colonial period, with heroic portraits of key figures from John Macarthur and Francis Greenaway to the modern business executives of the day. It was commissioned by the Royal Insurance Company, for its Head Office at 414 Collins Street which was demolished in the early 1960s.
