Time:7pm
In twin hovering Goodyear blimps, a platinum starlet (Marti Domination) builds geometric patterns on the blue-Astroturf field below. Set at the Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho (Barney's hometown), this Busby Berkeley-style musical revue maps the formation of an 'undifferentiated' reproductive system (marking the first six weeks of foetal development).

Cremaster 2 R18+

The circular narrative of this hallucinatory Gothic western loops from the 1977 execution of notorious murderer Gary Gilmore (Barney) to 1893, when Harry Houdini (Norman Mailer), Gilmore's supposed grandfather, performed at the World's Columbian Exposition. Set in landscapes ranging from salt flats to glacial ice fields, Gilmore's story is metaphorically represented via the life cycle of bees and corresponds to the second phase of foetal development.

As its title suggests, Made in U.S.A. pays a brightly coloured Pop Art style tribute to American noir movies such as Howard Hawk's The Big Sleep (1946). The film is filled with lovely and lingering close-ups of Karina at her most lovely and emotive and as her predetermined last film with Godard Made in U.S.A is as much a tongue-in-cheek homage to Karina as it is to America.

Time:Fri: 9.30pm and Sun 3.30pm
Returning to a more personal scale of filmmaking after the special effects-driven juggernaut Batman Returns, Burton's offbeat biopic, shot in luminous black and white, is a freewheeling adaptation of the life and low-budget times of Edward D. Wood Jr. (Johnny Depp), the Z grade film director and would-be auteur whose name became synonymous with an endearingly disproportionate self-confidence in the face of an acute lack of talent. Martin Landau deservedly won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Bela Lugosi.

The Refuge

Venue:ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne
Date:'Thu 2 Dec - Sun 12 Dec'
Recalling the tone of his masterful drama Under The Sand, François Ozon's latest work returns to the seaside and to the exploration of complex femininity. She retreats to a secluded villa where she is joined by her deceased lover's brother and, through a series of deceptively casual incidents, a deeply charged relationship develops. Ozon elicits fine performances from the radiant Isabelle Carré and pop star-turned-actor Louis-Ronan Choisy, again proving himself a deft hand at revealing the ambiguities that simmer beneath human relationships.
