Ginger. Female. Single. Childless. In 1645, five-star rock comedian Geraldine Quinn would have been burned as a witch.

Mistaken for Satan s bit of rough, in her new show Hex and the City, Quinn discovers she s enemy #1. She has 60 minutes to restore the world s sanity before her accusers produce their Jiffy Firelighters and get burny.

Geraldine Quinn (Dumb Things, SEXDEATHBOWIE) explodes religious intolerance and our obsession with the other side in this blistering rock opera about fear, heresy, judgement and spending more time trying to contact the dead than it takes to write a postcard to your mum.

With award-winning songwriting (Green Room Awards, 2007) and trademark irreverence, Hex is a hand-clappin , thigh-slappin wild ride towards rationalism. All in a tutu and killer heels.

Emilie Gray Unveiled at Extravagant Expression 2009

Venue:Armargh,226 Kooyong Road, Toorak
Time:Doors open at 7pm and close at 10pm.

In a society which perpetuates an unrealistic perception of how we should look, Emilie is rewriting the rules. Having overcome an eating disorder, she believes that clothing should reflect one s personality and individuality, instead of conforming to the current in look .

Emilie s designs are infused with her flair for the dramatic and often incorporate unconventional features, while remaining refined and wearable.

Emilie cites films Chocolat and Sweeney Todd as some of her influences. She also draws inspiration from the structured nature of Victorian corsets for women, and the formality of tailcoats and smart shirts for men. Emilie creates her pieces in fresh and fun fabrics, which counteracts their sharp design lines. I love paradoxes, such as mixing innocent with a slightly darker twist, like a fifties style silhouette with the accentuated waist, combined with gothic fabric and black lace, or else a corseted, more gothic style in a really bright fabric. she said.

According to Emilie, fashion design played an integral role towards recovery from her eating disorder. Channelling my energy into a creative force, rather than a destructive one was the most active key to recovery, she said.

Eating disorders, she revealed, are coping mechanisms, so if a person isn t coping, their body and mind might use this outlet, destructive as it might be. Therefore, finding a more positive way to cope is what needs to happen for recovery to take place .

Emilie is aware that given her battle with an eating disorder, her chosen profession may raise some eyebrows. Sometimes I think it s ironic that I spend my time delving into a world that is so focused on what people look like [but] I try to infuse my designs with character, and whether or not a person is quirky or caring, witty or a chatterbox, their personality is the most important thing. she said.

As such, most of Emilie s creations are one of a kind. She does this in order to focus on the fact that no matter what size or shape someone is, they have points to show off, and each person has the power to decide what looks good for them .

Emilie s unique pieces are a welcome change from dictating fashion fads. Individuality is beautiful, not photocopies , she said.

This captivating collection of 135 diary style quilts features an uplifting story with the inclusion of a truly amazing submission of journal quilts by Cranbrook resident, Annette Sibson.

A very talented group of Australian and New Zealand art quilters spent twelve months creating the collection. Meeting regularly online, the quilting group contributed to the collection each month, making a small quilt that captured either an event that touched them, an emotion they felt, a landscape they were inspired by or a new technique they were trying out.

The five journal quilts submitted by Annette Sibson reveal her brave journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Experimenting with stitching, photos, quilting and dyeing, Annette s quilts are indeed a journal disclosing the emotions she felt after her diagnosis and surgery. A testament to her inner strength and courage, Annette s quilts (below) reveal her inspiring journey from disbelief right through to acceptance and embracing the challenge.

Akoch Manhiem arrived in Australia as a Sudanese Lost Boy . He s returning to his village for the first time in almost a decade. His bags are packed and his flag is in hand but will he return Sudanese?

Also starring comedian Trent McCarthy and singer Ajak Kwai, Returning Sudanese is the hilarious and heartfelt sequel to last year s sell-out show, Turning Sudanese, which followed McCarthy s amusing integration into Melbourne s Sudanese community.

This groundbreaking new comedy follows Akoch s journey from a world of cars and electricity to a far flung village steeped in tribal customs. The show combines hilarious video footage from Akoch s recent trip to Sudan with fast-paced theatrical storytelling and musical interludes.

Audiences will be captivated by Akoch s natural charm and comic talent, as he encounters a suite of colourful characters portrayed by Trent McCarthy.

McCarthy s previous shows include Who is Abdul Smith? (Melbourne Fringe 2008), Turning Sudanese (MICF 2008) and Confessions of a Talkback Junkie (MICF 2007). He also appears in the quirky political satire, Mo the Plumber in this year s Comedy Festival, alongside Mohammed El-leissy.

Returning Sudanese is a show you won t forget, and the type of comedy we need to see more of in Melbourne.

On 14 April 2009, Opera Australia presents the Australian premire of Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Arts Centre. This rare bel canto masterpiece will star Hye Seoung Kwon and Catherine Carby as the young lovers, Giulietta and Romeo, with Brad Cohen conducting.

The Capulets and the Montagues retells the classic Romeo and Juliet story. Although Shakespeare's play about the star-crossed lovers is the best-known version, Bellini actually drew on Renaissance sources, which in turn draw on Medieval and Classical sources. When I Capuleti begins Romeo and Giulietta have already met, their families are political rivals, Juliet is betrothed to Tebaldo and Romeo is trying to broker peace. The negotiations fail and so the lovers must resort to subterfuge. Bellini wrote the work in only six weeks, with the premire on 11 March 1830, at La Fenice in Venice.

Making a major role debut as Giulietta is Hye Seoung Kwon who will be remembered most recently for her touching portrayal of Dorinda in Orlando and Micaëla in Carmen. Hye Seoung, a former member of the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program from 2005-2006 has sung many major roles with Opera Australia including Pamina (The Magic Flute), Mimì (La bohme), Countess (The Marriage of Figaro), Liù (Turandot), Nanetta (Falstaff), LÏla (The Pearlfishers) and Oberto and the title role in Alcina. Hye Seoung follows in the wake of such artists as Maria Callas, Dame Joan Sutherland and Natalie Dessay and most recently Anna Netrebko as the tragic heroine.
