Fee:$30 / Conc. $20 / Group (8+) $20
Booking:Melbournefringe.com.au / (03) 9660 9666
The Melbourne Town Players' Attract/Repel is a visually and aurally stunning new work that takes no prisoners as it peels back the layers of perception, misconception and how we see the world.

In the second work by Melbourne's most fearless new theatre company, director Ming-Zhu Hii (Sandwiches, Two, Y.) goes beyond the pale, taking the audience on a raw, honest and deeply insightful journey into racial identification, discrimination, and the darkness and light inherent in Australia's many-cultured society.

Choreographed movement, in repsonse to the extraordinary lighting and sound, explores the potency of colour as an expression of the internal worlds of the attractive and the repellant; the attracted and the repelled.

The verbal component of the piece amounts to what can only be described as an interrogation. What begins as an entertaining and seemingly benign question and answer sequence onstage, slowly but inexorably turns the interrogator's light on us all, and takes an unflinching look at who we are, how we really behave, and what it means to be an Australian. Central to the work is the not-so-rhetorical question, 'How racist are you?'

Greenpeace present: What will end Japanese whaling - an insider's view

Venue:Mitchell Theatre, Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, Level 1, 280 Pitt Street, Sydney
Date:'Wednesday, 9 September '
Time:6.30-8.30pm
Fee:A free public event with Japanese activist Toru Suzuki
Booking:whales.au@greenpeace.org
In a unique presentation, Japanese anti-whaling activist Toru Suzuki will provide an insight into the forces behind Japan's whaling industry.

Why does the Japanese Government continue to defy international condemnation and kill hundreds of whales in Antarctic waters each summer? Who profits from Japanese 'scientific' whaling when stockpiles of whale meat remain frozen in storage and no credible science is produced after killing 12,000 whales?

Most importantly, after 22 years of Japanese 'scientific' whaling, how can it finally be brought to an end?

These are just some of the questions Toru will discuss.

One-half of the so-called Tokyo Two, Toru and fellow activist Junichi Sato of Greenpeace Japan made headlines in Japan last year when they exposed a whale meat scandal revealing widespread corruption throughout the country's whaling industry.

They are currently awaiting trial and face up to 10 years in prison for their efforts to bring down whaling in Japan.

Have you ever overheard a conversation on the train and been transfixed? Did you let your mind wander? Did you fill in the gaps? Perhaps you invented the entire life story of the characters on which you eavesdropped?

Under the acclaimed direction of Anna Tregloan, The Dictionary of Imaginary Places captures the complexity of urban life in a Dada inspired work where transcribed conversations, rants and whisperings uttered by everyday commuters on Melbourne's metropolitan rail network are reinvented into a unique and seductive piece of theatre.

Unpredictable, roughly hewn and surprisingly tender, this work will showcase the topsy-turvy daily grind as fourconsummate performers take up the challenge of clowning their way through the abyss between what we assume
about someone, what they believe of themselves and what might just be possible.

On Saturday 10 October the inaugural Live in Balance one-day workshop will take place at the Bondi Pavilion, led by Sydney fitness and yoga instructor Nicky Arthur.

According to a recent national poll, commissioned by Lifeline Australia, 41 per cent of Australians are experiencing unhealthy levels of stress, and a whopping 87 per cent of the nation is experiencing some degree of stress.

"People are finding it harder to cope with everyday life. Often there is major discord in our work - life balance," says workshop presenter Nicky Arthur.

Live in Balance is an interactive workshop to help re-program your lifestyle from chaos to balance and is designed around Nicky's philosophy that anyone can be motivated, inspired and challenged to make positive, sustainable changes in their life - they just usually need a hand to get started.

The workshop begins with a session of introductory yoga, tai chi and meditation to teach participants how to reintroduce balance, clarity and relaxation to their life. It then covers time management and goal setting techniques, plus the benefits of healthy nutrition and positive self-talk.

The works explore the possibilities of imagining and inhabiting spaces other than our own; of colonising the Moon; of crossing into parallel universes and revisiting lost histories.

World Square's involvement in Art & About is an opportunity to present thirteen of the best emerging local artists, across ten works, as well as a chance for our visitors to win one of the works by voting for the People's Choice Award.

World Square is an ideal open-air venue for the artists to portray how they have interpreted the 'Other World Square' theme.
