KOTO, Know One Teach One, is a unique vocational training program and not for profit restaurant that is changing the lives of street and disadvantaged young people in Vietnam.

KOTO began in the late 90 s when Jimmy Pham, an Australian Vietnamese tour guide was moved by the plight of young people living on the streets of Hanoi. In 1999, with the assistance of Melbourne Chef Tracey Lister, he started a sandwich shop as a way of providing disadvantaged young Vietnamese with an income and hospitality training; KOTO was born.

KOTO s founder, Jimmy Pham and one of its graduates will host a special fundraising event on Tuesday 26 May in Melbourne, supported by Box Hill Institute and Peregrine Adventures.

Mr Thai, who is accompanying Jimmy, is proof that KOTO is changing lives and giving opportunities to Vietnam s youth. Thai grew up in a poor rural family in Hanam Province. At 14 years old, he came to Hanoi to find work to support his family, because his parents could not afford his schooling. But jobs were hard to get and he ended up as a shoeshine boy, working on the streets for four years until he heard about KOTO.

Meet Jimmy and Mr Thai, hear their stories; bid on wonderful items like a 12 day Peregrine Adventures Vietnam trip for two as part of the silent and live auctions; enjoy good food for a great cause; and help KOTO to continue to provide training for young people in hospitality, English language and life skills, giving them the opportunity to gain good jobs and careers so they can support themselves and their families.

Set in the late 1920s, featuring an impressive cast including Jessica Biel, Ben Barnes, Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas, Easy Virtue is effervescent entertainment telling the story of Larita (Biel), a glamorous young American woman who is swept off her feet by young Englishman, John Whittaker (Barnes), and marries impetuously. As the sparks fly and secrets are revealed, Larita attempts to tip-toe through the minefield laid by her mother-in-law yet at the same time finds an unexpected ally in John s father (Firth). Like a vintage bottle of champagne, Easy Virtue fizzes with lacerating wit, elegance and fun.

Booking:www.stampinup.com or call (02) 811 3 0500. To donate directly to the Austrailan Red Cross go to www.redcross.org.au
Stampin' Up!, a Sydney direct-sales crafting company, is encouraging Aussies to get involved in its Bushfire Appeal campaign to help victims of the Victoria bushfires.

From 12 February until 31 March 2009, Stampin' Up! will donate half of the retail value of sales from a select group of ten stamp sets to the Australian Red Cross to assist in the relief effort.

To date, Stampin' Up! independent consultants [demonstrators,] many of whom have also donated their sales commissions, have raised over $31,000 for the cause.

Stampin' Up!'s demonstrators throughout Australia and New Zealand are also donating their time and talents to serve those affected by the disaster. In addition to donating cash, the demonstrators are holding crafting workshops specifically to create handmade cards to donate to victims staying in tent camps so they can communicate with friends and relatives.

Claire Daly, a Victorian demonstrator says, " I think we all wanted to do something. One of the women in my downline works for the local member of parliament in Healesville. Apparently over 180 of the people who have died are in her constituent, so our team are making cards for her to send to the families. It's heartwarming to see such a great compassionate response among demonstrators and Australians in general."

"The response from our demonstrators has been outstanding," says Australian general manager, Aaron Scott. "The idea to hold stamping events and workshops originated when one of our demonstrators heard a comment from a woman who lost her home saying that she didn't even have a birthday card to give her son. It's inspiring to see people reaching out this way."

Sydney Duo To Paddle 740km From Byron Bay To Bondi Beach Over Christmas And New Year Raising Money For Prostate Cancer

Date:'20th December 2008'
Booking:www.b2b4prostate.blogspot.com.au
On 20th December 2008, two Sydney city workers will be setting out from Byron Bay in a two-person sea kayak to take on a twenty day adventure of a lifetime, as they paddle down the east coast of Australia to Bondi Beach. Theyll be braving 5m swells, 30 knot winds, reefs, sharks and muscle fatigue this Christmas and New Year as they raise money for charity.

Scott Timbrell from Bondi and Rob Lowe from Manly, have set themselves the challenge of raising $10,000 for The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, by paddling a two person sea kayak along the 740km of coast line. Scotts father, Douglas Timbrell was recently diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, but due to the skills of doctors at the Sydney hospital, hes now fit and well and will be shadowing the pair down the coast as they prepare for fundraising events in each town along the way.

Scott Timbrell said, Weve been told about sharks and dangerous weather that well have to face on the trip, but its nothing compared to being told that your dad has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. I thought at the time that I could either sit around and do nothing, or get up and do something about it. So here we are.

Prostate Cancer is a serious but avoidable illness. Its as prevalent as breast cancer is in women, but general awareness of the disease is lower and often diagnosis is made too late. Men over 40 should go to the doctor and ask for a routine check-up.

Scott and Rob are relative novices when it comes to sea kayaking. Rob said, Neither of us have ever done anything like this before and training has been tough to fit around our jobs, but were on track and are both excited about getting onto the water. Were looking forward to drumming up some support and funds for Prostate Cancer in coastal towns along the way.

All equipment has been organised by friends, sponsors and people who support their cause. Adventurer James Castrission, who achieved the world first trans Tasman kayak crossing said, "It's great to see fellow kayakers getting out there and challenging themselves, whilst at the same time raising funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer.
Both Justin and I believe in what Rob and Scott are going out to achieve and will support them in any way that we can. We can only urge you to do the same.

Anyone wishing to follow their journey can visit their www.b2b4prostate.blogspot.com.au website where pictures taken by a waterproof Olympus Tough 1030sw camera, videos and news, will be uploaded along the way. On the site there is also a link for those wishing to donate money to The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Deeply moved by the disaster, Alex and Fanny have joined forces with the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, and many other businesses and individuals to provide relief to their homeland.

Within weeks of handing over their Darlinghurst chocolate shop as a collection point, Boon had collected tonnes of canned goods, clothes and household items.

To make donating and coordinating the relief effort even simpler, Alex has devised the Pallet Purchase Program, a unique system where individuals and organisations can select goods from a pre-determined list with one of the partnering companies such as Campbell's Cash n Carry.

Alex has been touched by the generosity of the Australia public, saying that so many of his customers have been asking how they can also help.

You can make your contribution to the Pallet Purchase Program in-store at Boon Chocolates until the end of November.

Date:'Sunday 19th April 2009 '
Booking:www.justgive.org/avedawalkforwater
Aveda announces a new global campaign WALK FOR WATER that acknowledges the daily struggle of over one billion people who do not have access to clean water. On Sunday 19th April, Aveda will host a series of 6k walks in participating cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth) to raise awareness, funds, and excitement for the need to protect clean water around the world.

Six kilometers represents the average distance that women in developing countries walk daily to collect water (UNICEF). Executed locally by Aveda salons and spas, the walks in Australia will raise money for Global Greengrants Fund, a nonprofit that supports grassroots efforts to preserve clean water and protect the environment in more than 100 countries worldwide.
-Worldwide, 1.2 billion people lack access to the water they need to live. If the current trend continues, in less than 20 years, two-thirds of the world s people will not have access to enough water. (Water Treaty)
-To date, Aveda has raised $4.9 million for organizations protecting clean water and hopes to raise an additional $3 million (USD) for water-related issues in 2009.
-Earth Month is an international effort during the month of April to raise awareness and funds around a common cause. Earth Month 2009 builds upon the momentum created by the Aveda Earth Month 2007 and 2008 campaigns to work towards making clean water accessible to every person on the planet.

Variety's Children's Charity Bash

Venue:Sydney Opera House at Bennelong Point
Date:'16th August-25th August'
Booking:Varietynsw.org.au
This year's 25th anniversary event will be a bit of a re-enactment of the very first Bash, in that it too will depart from the Sydney Opera House at 'Bennelong Point,' on (16th August arriving at Broken Hill on 25th August).

The Bash is not a race or rally but rather a drive in the outback with like-minded fund raisers, driving miles for the smiles, enjoying travelling to parts of Australia that they may not otherwise see, at the same time as raising money to support kids in need. While there are few rules, blatant cheating and bribery are not only allowed but encouraged and bashers must be in a pre 1972 vehicle, decorated as weird and wonderfully as possible!

The trip will travel some of Australia's remotest regions, detouring through Woomera, Alice Springs and the notorious Oodnadatta track east of Coober Pedy, onto their final destination of Broken Hill.

Variety Bashes Australia wide last year raised over $8 million and Variety NSW this year have set a goal of raising $2 million net during its 11 day adventure. Each year Variety receives an overwhelming amount of appeals from individuals, associations, institutions, hospitals and schools. All appeals are carefully and thoughtfully considered by their volunteer committees and once a grant is approved, Variety makes direct payment. In 2008, Variety granted 296 appeals and over $13 million was given to help individual children, hospitals, schools, community groups and charitable organisations.
