Brigid Treloar, leading food journalist and stylist, cookbook author and Sydney Seafood School demonstrator, will prepare some simple and delicious recipes using lesser known seafood species that are affordable for the whole family. The Women s Weekly Test Kitchen will host Get Fresh with Fish, an interactive and educational initiative aimed at encouraging Australians to explore the fabulous taste and superb quality of their own locally caught seafood.

Some species Brigid will be cooking with include:

Silver Warehou a low priced fish available all year round. It has a medium flavour, low-medium oiliness and slightly dry textured flesh with good sized flakes and few bones, which are easily removed. It suits all cooking methods and goes well with chilli, citrus or curry pastes.

Sea Mullet a low priced fish available all year round. It has a strong flavour, oily and moist, soft-medium textured flesh with few bones. It is best to remove the skin, as well as the fatty tissue immediately under the skin, to give a milder flavour. Sea Mullet is ideal for baking, grilling or BBQ. It is best cooked with other strong flavours such as onion, tamarind, tomato, vinegar and wine.

Gould's Squid available wild-caught, these marine cephalopods have smooth, light brownish-pink skin with a purpley-blue stripe running down the tube. They are low priced and available all year round. With a mild, subtle flavour, low-medium oiliness, and dry with firm texture it goes well with chilli, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, lemon, lime and tomato.

Ocean Jacket generally sold as boneless fillets it has a mild flavour, low oiliness and is moderately moist, with firm flesh. Great for parching, steaming, pan-fry or BBQ the firm flesh holds together well in soups, curries and casseroles while the flesh works well minced for fish cakes and fish balls.

Charles Darwin his life, his voyage of scientific discovery on HMS Beagle and the great surge of scientific research into natural history that he inspired.

Hooker visited Hobart while serving as an assistant surgeon on HMS Erebus during the 1839-43 Ross Antarctic expedition. With the assistance of Tasmanian collectors he published the first comprehensive description of the island s flora.
Thomas Huxley was assistant surgeon on HMS Rattlesnake on its survey of northern Australia and New Guinea in 1846-50.

The seminar In the wake of the Beagle Science in the southern oceans from the age of Darwin will be presented by the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Australian Research Council at the National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour.
It will coincide with the opening of the National Maritime Museum s exhibition Charles Darwin Voyages and ideas that shook the world.

The symposium is open to everyone. Registration for the two days (9.30 am 6 pm) is $50, for one day $25. Light refreshments will be served in the morning and afternoon breaks. Registration also includes an inspection of the new exhibition.

Orchestra Victoria returns to the Melbourne Town Hall to perform a free twilight concert led by Principal Guest Conductor, Marko Letonja. Orchestra Victoria will perform two invigorating works: Rimsky-Korsakov s Capriccio Espagnol Op 34 and Dmitri Shostakovich s Symphony No. 1.
Capriccio Espagnol, Op 34 is a work based on Spanish melodies. Written in 1887, it was originally intended for solo violin but Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov later decided that the melodies would be better demonstrated by a full orchestra. The Capriccio calls on a large percussion section and asks the violins, violas and celli to imitate guitars.
Symphony No. 1 was written between 1924 and 1925 and first performed in Saint Petersburg in 1926.

Dimitri Shotstakovich wrote this work as his graduation piece, completing it at the age of 19. The work consists of four movements, the last two are played without interruption resulting in a breathtaking 30 minutes of non-stop music. As a special highlight to the programme, renowned Australian organist David Drury will perform William Lovelock s Sinfonia Concertante with Orchestra Victoria on the magnificent Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ. Composer William Lovelock was born in London in
1899 and moved to Brisbane in 1956. He wrote the majestic Sinfonia Concertante in 1968 whilst teaching at the Queensland State Conservatory. The work is rarely played and is a hidden gem.

FREE LECTURE Kings of the Maya Rain Forest
Presented by Dr Peter Mathews
Tuesday 19 May

Advances over the past fifty years have led to the deciphering of Maya hieroglyphs and a complete revision of our understanding of first millennium Maya society in Mexico and Central America. This free presentation looks at life among the rulers of the ancient Maya—their internal organisation and their (often stormy) relations with one another.

Peter Mathews received his PhD from Yale University and has worked in Mexico and Guatemala for over 30 years. His specialisation is the study of Maya hieroglyphic writing and the implications of the hieroglyphic texts for understanding ancient Maya history and society.

FREE LECTURE Paupers and Immigrants
Presented by Dr Peter Davies
Wednesday 20 May

Sydney's Hyde Park Barracks is well known for its association with male convicts. With the end of transportation to NSW in 1840, however, the building became a depot for female immigrants, and later an asylum for destitute women. A large collection of artefacts found beneath the floorboards of the barracks promises to shed new light on the institutional lives of these women.

Dr Peter Davies is an historical archaeologist at La Trobe University. His previous research has focused on community life at Henry's Mill in Victoria's Otway Ranges.

World Kids Colouring Day ( www.world-kids-colouring-day.com.au )

Date:'6 May, 2009'
Booking:www.savethechildren.org.au & www.staedtler.com.au.
Australian children participate in global art initiative in support of Save the Children.

Calling on all teachers and parents ? register now and help students and children to make this event successful. World Kids Colouring Day could change the life of a Colombian child forever and teach children about a very different world.

STAEDTLER, the manufacturer of writing instruments, has united globally to support the international child rights organisation Save the Children through this special promotional day. In this colouring campaign, Australian children (and children the world over) are invited to colour and raise money for their beautiful artworks, to help other children in need.

STAEDTLER is calling upon all teachers, educators and parents to get involved and organise their own colouring events at school, kindergarten and home. Ideas include a colouring day or colouring workshop, or a colouring event in which the artworks are exhibited and/or auctioned, the possibilities for creativity are unlimited. Further information, suggestion, fundraising ideas can be found at: www.world-kids-colouring-day.com.au. On this website, schools and organisations are able to register to support World Kids Colouring Day, and receive a starter kit to inspire their colouring activities. There is even a beautiful 10 piece educational mural puzzle for the classroom wall of a Colombian scene. Also available are teaching resources and information to plan lessons and educate children about life in Colombia.

As the world?s largest independent child rights organisation, Save the Children works in over 100 countries, including Australia. With the donations collected from World Kids Colouring Day, STAEDTLER will support Save the Children?s ?Rewrite the Future? program which focuses on securing quality education for the millions of children out of school due to war and armed conflict in Colombia. STAEDTLER will support Save the Children to develop learning programs for children, train teachers as well as provide adequate teaching and learning materials.

The universal language of pictures is understood the world over and unites children on all continents. Colouring is an important form of expression, especially for small children still discovering their world. World Kids Colouring Day needs the support of adults to help co-ordinate the fundraising events and to help children understand how their contribution can change the world of a child less fortunate.

STAEDTLER will recognise those children and schools who have organised the most creative campaigns, those with the highest donation and those with donations totalling more than $500 (?Donation Champions?) with great colouring sets.
