Bill gets an offer on their new home and he and Giuliana decide they're going to sell the place they built together. Now they must decide - do they see themselves as city people or suburb people?

Giuliana has the blueprints for their home framed to give to Bill as a gift, but when they decide to sell the home, she isn't sure if she should give him the present. Bill regrets selling the house, which makes it even tougher for Giuliana to give her gift.

Giuliana and Bill head back to Giuliana's hometown of Bethesda, Maryland. Giuliana has been asked to be a presenter at a prestigious alumni event at her Alma Mater, the University of Maryland. Giuliana has to try to balance preparing for the event, and spending time with her family and friends during a whirlwind weekend on the east coast.

Bill is obsessed with all things Italian, and decides he's going to learn a little bit of the Italian language to impress Giuliana's family. His goal is to fit in with the family.

Giuliana doesn't like to fly. She flies commercially because she has to - to spend time with Bill and for work. But she's always dreaded flying in a small plane. Giuliana decides she's going to conquer her fear of flight, and tries a series of therapies to get over her phobia - so she can fly with Bill once he gets his pilot's license.

Giuliana thinks she can handle herself on Bill's construction site? he doesn't think she can handle manual labor. They make a bet. Bill assigns Giuliana some tedious jobs on the site. Giuliana struggles juggling getting over her fear of flying with working at the site.

Since getting married, Giuliana hasn't spent much time with her friends. She's either working, in Chicago, or spending time with Bill. Giuliana decides she wants to reconnect her girlfriends.

Word of Ruby's diet has spread among her friends and she's getting phone calls from her ex-boyfriend, Denny Starr, for whom she was never able to lost her weight. He's been gone for 6 years. He rides into town and into Ruby's life. And although Ruby's always open to an old friend, Georgia and Jeff are not amused. Jeff doesn't want Ruby hurt again and Georgia thinks Denny is the worst for Ruby. Love is on Ruby's mind as she confesses to her buddies on a girls night to the movies - but never again will she tolerate someone who tells her to lose weight for a man. Ruby tells Denny it's over. Back in her kitchen, Ruby and Georgia take advice from a dietician and prepare a healthy meal. Ruby is changing.

Ruby is completely frustrated with her life, her diet, her training - she's hit a wall and is annoyed by everyone and everything. Suddenly Ruby's diet and daily routine is interrupted by a dramatic thunderstorm and power outage in which she must make emergency plans for her nephew and her best friend's son. Along the way, Ruby understands that there is a lot about dieting that has to do with her interior, emotional life and she consults her therapist about the reasons why she let herself get so big. After her session and at her best friend Georgia's suggestion she meets with her sister and looks through photographs from her childhood - to see if anything sparks her memory.

Returning to Los Angeles where she lived for 6 years, Ruby endures the challenges of travel. She travels with her dogs, her roommate Jeff, best friend Georgia and her two sons. She visits her friend Brittany Daniel, her twin sister Cynthia Daniel and other LA buddies who have had new babies. Ruby and her friends tour Hollywood, visit Knott's Berry Farm and throw a belated baby shower for their friends Melissa and Michael. Ruby works out with Billy Blanks Jr. at Hollywood's Gold's Gym and he inspires her to keep up the diet - against all the odds. During her time in LA, Ruby struggles with the idea of motherhood - and examines her desire for children. Is this something she wants? Or has the opportunity to have children passed her by?

Upon her return to Savannah from a vacation, Ruby is shocked to discover that "doing it her way" has not been successful and that she's gained weight. Determined to undo the damage, she re-commits herself to her diet. When an old high school buddy returns for a reunion, Ruby and Jeff decide to throw a surprise "early" 40th birthday party for their best friend Georgia. In all the excitement, Ruby remembers that she must trust in her experts. She attends church with her friends where she receives some unexpected and much-needed support from the congregation.

In a moment of triumph for Ruby, her weight dips below 400 pounds. Reduced weight brings increased temptations and the need for Ruby to take greater responsibility for her actions. She is able to drive for the first time in 5 years - and she must resist the temptations of fast-food and snacks. Ruby must also relearn driving skills and visits the Georgia DMV for safety tips for overweight drivers. Ruby becomes confused when she notices that her team is in disagreement about the best way forward. In an emotional and heated summit meeting, Ruby brings her trainer, her doctor, her therapist and her nutritionist together to map out the best and healthiest way forward.
