Motor Neurone Disease Week

Venue:Mndaust.asn.au/mnd-week
Date:'May 6th - 12th '
Imagine your active mind being trapped in a motionless body. One by one, you lose the ability to walk, talk, swallow... and to hug.

This reality is faced by approximately 1,400 Australians who are currently living with motor neurone disease (MND). The disease 'switches off' the nerves which normally signal our muscles to move, leaving a person paralysed but fully alert. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.

MND Week runs from 6-12 May and MND Australia is highlighting the active minds of people living with MND. Like Duncan Bayly, aged 34. "One of the hardest parts about this disease is how insidious it is. Your brain remains completely active and you have all your faculties but your body just wastes away."

Rhythms of Revolution: The Black Power Mix Tape

Date:'Wednesday, May 9th'
From 1965 to 1975, a crew of Swedish filmmakers went searching for the real America, and found a nation at war with itself and its values. Working from this rediscovered 16mm footage, director Goran Hugo Olsson steers clear of the watered-down 'pop' take on the Black Power movement.

Long-form interviews with firebrand Panthers such as Angela Davis and Stokely Carmichael are cut against news reports and contemporary perspectives from subjects including singer Harry Belafonte.

Olsson brings the clarity of an outsiders' perspective to this inspired time capsule format in what is a superb companion piece to Agnes Varda's classic observational documentary, Black Panthers.

Filmed live at London's Royal Opera House, anyone who loves Puccini will find this opera by Francesco Cilea, a contemporary and fellow Italian, just as rich, melodious and romantic. Its title role has long been associated with star sopranos, and this production is no exception with Angela Gheorghiu singing opposite Jonas Kaufman as Maurizio. The story of jealous rivalry in love is set between two worlds of the theatre and the aristocracy, and this production brings the 18th-century atmosphere to life in rich historical detail. Against this backdrop, the fictional version of the life of the real and famous actress Adrienne Lecouvreur is played out to its final and deadly conclusion. With the combination of a wonderful score, world-leading cast and exciting production team, this is an unmissable event indeed.
