Dumped for Drinks with the Boys

My boyfriend announced last week that he doesn't want to see me anymore. We've had our problems lately but I never thought he was going to just break it off with me. We've been dating for a few months and everything was `perfect until a few weeks ago when I commented on his drinking and after that, I noticed a change in his attitude. Is this a guy thing or am I kidding myself that we were happy? Apart from the pain of losing what I had hoped would be a lasting relationship, I also have this awful confusion inside me. He refuses to meet and discuss things.

What can I do?

Renata

A/ Here are my thoughts on your situation:

1. His drinking might be more serious than you realise and when you called him on it, he backed off.

2. You were keener than he in regard to the relation and the future.

3. He felt more than was comfortable for him and he broke up with you out of fear.

This is definitely not a `guy thing as I've heard the same story from just as many guys as women. The first few months of a relationship are meant to be picture-perfect, all moonlight and romance and magic but after this `honeymoon period, reality sets in and

differences you didn't notice before become irritating. That's why a lot of couples don't make it past this initial stage. It's good to find out before you progress any further.

Only you can know which of these options I've offered is the most likely. Think about it and don't waste any energy in blaming either him or yourself. If it wasn't right, enjoy the memories and move on but give yourself time to grieve. If he doesn't want to talk right now, don't push but leave the door open for discussion later. No-one can really make you feel better at this time but you.

Body Talk Column is hosted by Charmaine Saunders. www.charmainesaunders.com

Send your requests to girl@girl.com.au attention Charmaine.
