Business Solutions Consultant

  1. Name
    Lidia

  2. Age
    26

  3. Job Title
    Business Solutions Consultant

  4. Job Description
    The position is a broad role encompassing project management, systems analysis, process re-engineering, Lotus Notes development, User training documentation and Technical Writing.

  5. Hours (per week)
    Varies from 45 hours - 70 hours

  6. What was your first job?
    I was a Business Analyst for a Local Government IT department.

  7. What inspired you to choose this particular career?
    Nothing. My first motivation was to enrol at The University of Melbourne; my second motivation was to study Economics. Straight commerce seemed boring, and at the time, there seemed to be a surplus of people doing commerce courses. The new buzz industry which wasn't exploited at the time, was IT, so I did an Information Management course which wasn't too technical ... I majored in Economics!

  8. What qualifications are needed to work in this field?
    Anything and everything! Skills will depend on the position you are filling. Obviously, programming requires you to be logical and to be able to program in the relevant programming language; training requires a whole different set of skills.As far as qualifications are concerned, it's all about 'on the job training/experience'. You need the degree to get your foot in the door, after that, the sky is the limit! To be a freelance contractor however, you'll need to be flexible, willing to accept change, have exceptional communications skills, and you need to be able to produce results within the first few months you are in the position - else it's out!

  9. What are the best aspects about your job?
    Variety. I can be a programmer one day, and a trainer the next!

  10. What are the worst aspects?
    I'm a freelance contractor, so there are a number of disadvantages:
    1. Need to self fund my training;
    2. No annual leave - you don't work, you don't get paid;
    The worst aspect however, is the insecurity of not knowing whether you'll have a job in 3 months time ... but then again, I suppose even a permanent position, isn't really permanent!

  11. How many years experience do you have in this field?
    5 years.

  12. Are there many employment opportunities?
    Haven't been unemployed yet!

  13. Other related careers
    In Computer programming there are many related careers - just depends on what you want to specialise in.
