Set in the 19th century, BUFFALO KIDS follows orphaned Irish siblings Mary and Tom, who arrive in New York City by ocean liner in 1886 hoping to reunite with their uncle. When he fails to meet them, they are swept into a cross-country journey aboard a transcontinental "Orphan Train" carrying children west in search of new homes. Unable to afford tickets, they secretly stay aboard and meet a stray dog named Sparky, along with Nick, a gentle non-verbal boy who has been rejected by potential adoptive families because of his disability. Nick quickly becomes an extraordinary friend who changes their journey.

When the children become separated from the train during a stop in the wilderness, they are left stranded in the American frontier. Forced to rely on each other for survival, they face wild animals, harsh conditions and dangerous outlaws as they try to find their way back.
