Make Sustainability a New Year's Resolution

Make Sustainability a New Year's Resolution

The importance of looking after our environment is more meaningful now than ever. With the new year just around the corner, more and more Aussies are reconsidering how they can better their relationship with the environment in 2020.

Here are 5 Tips on how Aussies can help make a difference by being more sustainable in 2020:

1. Reuse greywater for your garden
Greywater, is the waste water from washing machines, showers, baths and basins. The cheapest and easiest way to reuse greywater is by collecting it in buckets and watering your garden, every little bit counts. No one likes sloppy seconds, but trust me, your garden bed will!

2. Choose meat products that are 100% carbon neutral
Opt for certified carbon neutral meat on your next grocery shop. 'Cleaver's' and 'Borrowdale Free Range Pork' are both 100% carbon neutral (every animal, every product and every process). Enjoy your delicious organic snags, steaks and hot dogs, or free range Christmas pork roast, comfortable in the knowledge that they are the best available for the environment. Cleaver's is available in over 1,000 Coles, Woolworths and Independent supermarkets while Borrowdale Free Range Pork is available in butcher shops.

3. Don't replace it, repair it!
Reducing waste is the number one thing people can do in order to be more sustainable. In today's throw away society, we are notorious for replacing, instead of salvaging. Common throw away products include; furniture, appliances, shoes, jewellery and clothing. Take a furniture upholstery class or learn how to sow from YouTube. Everything we buy has a footprint associated with it and requires resources, so the less you buy, the less strain you put on the planet.

4. Refill and reuse
Join the craze on reusable coffee cups and water bottles - some may even go as far to say it tastes better coming out of your own cup! However for those mornings when you're waiting in line to order your coffee and realise you don't have your reusable mug (we've all been there), make sure to recycle properly when you're finished. Did you know, the lids of coffee cups are recyclable, while the actual cup isn't.

5. Use your car less and get moving
Unfortunately, those convenient little things we jump in to get around quickly are responsible for emissions of air pollution and greenhouse gases. For trips under 1km, swap the car for walking or cycling and get closer to the average daily step goal of 10,000. Grab a bus, train or car pool with friends in order to do your bit to reduce emissions into the environment. Riding into the new year like!
