Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Review

A Spectacular New Musical

The spectacular new musical Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has arrived in Australia, playing in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre until 21 July 2019. The production moves to Melbourne's Her Majesty's Theatre from 9 August, then to the Lyric Theatre, Brisbane from March 2020.

Five boys share the role of Charlie Bucket in this delicious tale, Benjamin Belsey (10 years of age, from Point Cook), Elijah Slavinskis (10, Ashburton), Edgar Stirling (10, St Kilda), Lenny Thomas (12, Bonbeach) and Lachlan Young (13, Camberwell).

Review: Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory shares the wild story of Willy Wonka with many laughs and enchantment. Impressive magic and stunts are woven amongst stunning vocals, an incredible ensemble and faultless chorography; whilst a contemporary set uses visual aids to complement the magical aspects and tremendous costumes; all of which creates a spectacular spectacle for all ages.

Convincing in his portrayal, Paul Slade Smith showcases the antics of Willy Wonka thoroughly well. Although most impressive, in the role of Charlie Bucket, is the talented, 10 year old Edgar Stirling who truly stood out on an otherwise adult-only stage.

Whilst we know the traditional Roald Dahl story this production has created subtle changes including modernising the introduction of each golden ticket winner. And, the representation of the Oompa-Loompas is remarkable, I won't share any spoilers but they certainly outshone my expectations.

Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is definitely one of the best shows I've seen, lately. I'd confidently say I sat through most of the show in awe with a huge smile, on my face.
