Australian Macadamia Oil Revealed as Key to Combatting Dry Skin

After a long, hot summer and the signs of one of Australia's coldest winter seasons, many Australians will be struggling with dry skin. However, new research confirms that many Australian women are basing their skincare on common misconceptions about the causes of dry skin and are not combatting the issue effectively.

A new national survey, conducted by Thursday Plantation and revealed this week, indicates that 85% of Australian women are suffering with dry skin issues, with 17% experiencing dry skin all of the time.

Australia has one of the harshest climates in the world, yet common myths and misconceptions mean Australians aren't properly addressing dry skin.

One in three (30%) Australian women believe dry skin is simply a result of genetics. Respondents believe that drinking water and staying hydrated (76%) is all you need to ward off dry skin. In fact, dry skin requires interventions that are easily absorbed, closely match the skin's own oil and protect from moisture loss.

Thursday Plantation has harnessed the ultra-hydrating properties of Australian grown Macadamia Oil into a new range tackling this dry skin dilemma to help Aussies combat the issue once and for all. The launch of the Thursday Plantation Macadamia Oil Dry Skin Range marks an important step forward to better educating Australians on the power of natural oils to replenish and manage dry skin.

Macadamia Oil has one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids, which helps to replenish the skin's natural protective barrier and boost water retention.

The unique chemical structure of macadamia oil means it is penetrates the skin easily without clogging pores. It is high in palmitoleic acid (omega 7 monosaturated fatty acid) - which is naturally secreted by sebaceous glands and helps to hydrate the skin and protect skin cells from oxidation - and oleic acid (a monosaturated fatty acid) – which helps macadamia oil to be quickly absorbed by the skin.

The survey also revealed many Australian women are reluctant to use natural oil-based products (62%) to control dry skin because they mistakenly believe it will lead to greasy-looking skin (35%) or cause skin break-outs (24%).

For over 40 years Thursday Plantation has been providing Australians with natural healthcare. This includes its iconic and widely recognised 100% pure and natural Tea Tree Oil.

The Macadamia Oil Dry Skin Range starts from RRP $7.99 and includes the Macadamia Ultra Hydrating Lip Balm, Macadamia Ultra Hydrating Daily Face Oil, Macadamia Ultra Hydrating Daily Body Oil and Macadamia Ultra Hydrating Face Cleansing Oil.

Stacey June and Kristie Mercer – known as The Thinkergirls, best mates, radio broadcasters and now Thursday Plantation's Maca Dames - recently put Macadamia Oil to the ultimate dry skin test in one of the driest places in the world, the Australian outback.

'We believe that everyone should make a conscious effort to know exactly what they are putting on their skin. For me, using natural and Aussie-grown products to combat dry skin makes sense," said Stacey.

'We travelled all the way to the Northern Territory to see if Macadamia oil could withstand the harsh, dry climate of the Aussie outback. But you don't have to head to the outback to really see the benefits of using Macadamia oil to manage dry skin - you can do it from your bathroom! We're really excited to get behind macadamia oil because like us, it's real, 100% natural and Aussie grown," said Kristie.

Interview with Stacey June and Kristie Mercer, The Thinkergirls

Question: What were the key findings from the latest research on Macadamia Oil?

Stacey June: So many of our girlfriends are already struggling with dry skin and winter isn't even here yet! There are so many different ways we've tried to combat dry skin that haven't seemed to work for us.

After partnering with Thursday Plantation for the launch of their Macadamia Oil Dry Skin Range, we have learnt that it isn't just us and our mates– a national survey shows that 85% of Aussie women have dry skin issues and 17% experience dry skin all the time!

Question: Are you surprised many women don't know how to manage their dry skin?

Kristie Mercer: Dry skin may seem like a really simple issue to fix – but if you don't understand why your skin is dry, it's super hard to fix it long term. As chicks that spend a lot of time outdoors as many of our fellow Aussies do – our skin really cops it. Dry air and low humidity are the key reasons we get a bit flaky, dry and go through dandruff leg season (laughs).

Stacey and I are big believers in finding natural solutions and know that natural oils are the way to go when it comes to dry skin!

Stacey June: When I use a product I can really notice the difference between when your skin REALLY absorbs the product and when it doesn't. I like it when it feels like your skin has drank a glass of water and feels refreshed and rejuvenated. Macadamia Oil does this because of the palmitoleic acid in the oil – it is closely matched to your own skin's, helping to stop moisture loss!

Question: What other misconceptions did the survey bring to light?

Kristie Mercer: It turns out there are LOTS of misconceptions about how to manage dry skin. Aussie women are confused about what to do about their dry skin and what benefits oils can have when added to their beauty regime.

Many Aussie women are reluctant to try natural oil-based skincare products on dry skin because they think it will leave their skin greasy, cause break-outs and clog their pores, which was a major concern for me – but this SO far from the truth!

There are so many natural goodies packed into Thursday Plantation's Macadamia Oil Dry Range. Macadamia Oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids which makes it perfect to hydrate and ward off dry skin for good! It also supports your skin's natural protective barrier and helps reduce pesky water loss which contributes to dryness. No more dandruff legs here!

Question: Can you tell us about the Australian outback Macadamia Oil test you conducted?

Stacey June: We are so proud to be Thursday Plantation's Maca Dames! So we felt it was such a great opportunity to see how Thursday Planation's new Macadamia Oil Dry Skin Range would hold up in one of the harshest and driest places on earth - the Aussie outback.

We really pushed it! On the shoot we had strong, crazy winds and seriously piping hot sun – we now laugh at how lucky we were that Macadamia Oil was the product we were working with! It certainly lived up to the test and kept our skin nourished and flake-free!

Question: How can we add Macadamia Oil to our current skin-care regime?

Kristie Mercer: The good news is, Macadamia Oil is great for all skin types so it is really easy to make space in your existing skincare regime for Thursday Plantation's Macadamia Oil goodies!

Macadamia Oil is super hydrating and can be used all over. Thursday Plantation's range means there is a dry skin solution for your lips, face and body.

We use on the reg - The Macadamia Ultra Moisturising Lip Balm which helps seal in moisture for smooth lips. It's also great for adding moisture to touch up your lipstick. The Macadamia Ultra Hydrating Daily Face Oil which helps to nourish and tone the delicate skin on the face. The Macadamia Ultra Hydrating Daily Body Oil intensely hydrates the dry skin on your body and The Macadamia Hydrating Face Cleansing Oil – which Stace swears by – deeply cleanses, purifies and conditions your face. Perfect for getting your make up off with one product!

Stacey June: It's so good. No other products needed! Another thing we really love about Thursday Plantation's range range is that it uses 100% naturally derived and 100% Australian grown Macadamia Oil so you don't have to worry about any hidden chemical nasties.

Question: Why is Macadamia Oil able to help our dry skin?

Kristie Mercer: Time to put our lab coats on – Macadamia Oil has one of the highest plant derived sources of palmitoleic acid which is the main fatty acid in human skin which moisturises. It also has high levels of oleic acid which helps the oil to be quickly absorbed by the skin and helps strengthen the skin's natural protective barrier.

So in simple terms, Macadamia Oil helps to slow water loss from the skin which is essential for maintaining hydrated and super lush skin.

Question: How often and how do we apply Macadamia Oil to our skin?

Stacey June: To really reap the full benefits of these little bottles of magic I use Thursday Plantation's Macadamia Oil Dry Skin Range every day – daily use will help to combat and avoid dry skin, especially in the lead up to winter.

Macadamia Oil is super easy to spread and is easily absorbed by the skin. The oil is similar to the natural oil of the skin and so is non-greasy on your skin and does not clog your pores – we promise. You also only need the teeniest bit so it lasts FOREVER!
