Selfie Tips From an Instagram Queen to Have Your Followers Double-Tapping Furiously

Aussies love a selfie, with two million taken in Australia every day, or 742 million per year, with 1,000 of the finest images being posted to Instagram every 10 seconds. Taking its cue from the elevator selfie phenomena, Crown Metropol unveils Australia's first moving art exhibition 'Metropol Elevated'.

With over 238K Instagram followers, Jasmin Howell of @friendinfashion has used the selfie to build her career as a local fashion icon and social influencer. She's generously shared her five top tips to help Aussies capture the perfect shot to have their followers double-tapping.

Melbournites and visitors to the city can test out the tips inside the Crown Metropol elevators where every surface has been transformed into eye-popping works of art that hero the bold and colourful work of Melbourne artist George Rose until November 26th, 2018. We're expecting to blow up Instagram with thousands of visitors to the hotel snapping their own #elevatorselfie.

Jasmin's selfie tips include:

KNOW YOUR ANGLES

The secret to nailing a great photo is knowing the angles that suit your face best. Generally, shooting from above is super flattering and will make your eyes seem larger and your face seem smaller. Don't go too high, otherwise you'll distort the photo, hold your phone just above eye level. When you've found your selfie-ready position, slowly rotate your phone around your face until you find the best light.

LIGHTING IS KEY

The perfect selfie requires great lighting! Avoid shadows and think of how the light hits your face. Using natural light where possible will give you a lovely even warm glow, but avoid direct strong sunlight as it's often not flattering and you'll find yourself squinting. If lighting is a problem, or you need an extra pop to your selfie, consider using flash. When used correctly, flash can give your skin that extra glow, but use with caution as incorrect use can make things blurry or overexpose your shot. Luckily the Crown Metropol elevators are well-lit, so you shouldn't have any trouble there.

COLOUR IS KING

To add interest to your selfie, think about colours. Find a nice background or a colourful piece of clothing that makes your eyes pop! George Rose's art in the Crown Metropol elevators is so bright and bold that it's guaranteed to help you capture a selfie that'll have your followers stop their scrolling to check you out.

GET SNAP HAPPY

I hardly ever post the first selfie I take, so make sure you take heaps of photos so you have plenty to choose from. Play with different angles and facial expressions to discover what best shows you off, then post that winning shot to the 'Gram.

#ELEVATORSELFIE

When you get inside an elevator, take advantage of the mirror. It's totally acceptable to have your phone in shot. Looking at your phone screen when shooting your selfie also helps makes things a little less intense, something that often happens when you're looking directly down the lens. Try taking pics on different angles, capturing all the beautiful artwork on every surface of the Crown Metropol elevators.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MIRROR

Test the tips out at Crown Metropol - until November 26 the elevators will be decked out with artworks on every surface by Melbourne artist and muralist George Rose, offering the perfect selfie backdrop.
