How much sugar are you eating for breakfast?
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you're in a rush to skip out the door, then grabbing your favourite cereal is the perfect choice. But did you know that not all breakfast cereals are created equal? Health conscious consumers are being asked to take a closer look at the nutrition panel of their favourite cereal to avoid often alarmingly high sugar levels that could be jeopardising health and weight management efforts, according to Justin Smidmore of The Metabolic Food Company, creator of SuperStart breakfast blend.

"Many consumers are completely unaware that the majority of popular cereals, even the so-called 'healthy' brands, are loaded with 20 per cent or more sugar," he says. Although having cereal at breakfast time helps maintain a healthy weight, the sugar content of many popular brands is undoing all the good work you put in.

With the rising concerns of our country's obesity epidemic, Smidmore believes it's crucial that consumers know the facts when it comes to misleading marketing and half-truths trumpeted by many cereal producers.

"Consumers need to actively seek out the complete nutritional picture of their favourite cereals to inform themselves to make genuine health-promoting choices," he advises. "Don't be misled by what's shouted on the front of the pack or highlighted on the nutritional panel. It's usually because the other nutritional facts are lacking. For example, if a food product is low in fat, there's a good chance its high in sugar. Given sugar's role in weight gain it defeats the purpose. The entire nutritional panel, including ingredients, is the place to get the facts about what you're eating."

With this in mind The Metabolic Food Company created its own Australian made, delicious, nutrient-rich, completely natural cereal, high in fibre, protein and goodness, to help you feel fuller longer and delivering a wealth of lipids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It has a low GI (32) and contains absolutely zero added sugars, a breakthrough in an overcrowded sugar-laden cereal market.
