Interview with Tony Taylor from SleepX

Question: How many hours sleep does the average adult require?

Tony Taylor: The average adult requires between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night. Personally, I find 8.5 – 9 hours of good quality sleep to be the magic number for myself. Anything less than 8 hours or more than 10 leaves me feeling tired and run down throughout the day.

Question: How important is a good night's sleep?

Tony Taylor: As an activity that takes up approximately a third of our lives, sleep is super important. A well-rested body leans towards better recovery after physical exertion and helps minimise health problems such as obesity and cardiovascular complications. Sleep is also vital for a healthy mind. It is during this time that our brains form new pathways to help us learn and remember information. After a good night's rest, you'll also notice improved focus, better decision-making and overall emotional wellbeing.

Question: How does bad sleep affect our health negatively?

Tony Taylor: In addition to missing out on the benefits listed above, a poor night's sleep will leave you feeling drained both physically and mentally. People tend to be less productive, are at much higher risk of making poor decisions and may have trouble managing their mood. Over extended periods of time, a lack of sleep has also been linked to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Question: What are your top healthy sleeping habits that we need to adopt this year?

Tony Taylor: Although I feel hypocritical writing this, my biggest healthy sleeping habit of the moment is putting down devices before bed. While that next episode of Stranger Things on Netflix or a scroll through your favourite social media feed might seem like the perfect way to wind down, our body's natural production of melatonin (which makes us feel sleepy) is being interrupted by this light, preventing us from falling asleep. This can be minimised by installing a blue light filter on your device, but a much more effective alternative is to put it down altogether.

Question: How can we maximise our sleep?

Tony Taylor: Some other things I swear by to help get a good night's sleep is doing some physical exercise or hitting the gym, not consuming caffeine after 2pm and planning out my next day so there's nothing left to keep me lying awake at night.

Question: What should our sleep environment look like?

Tony Taylor: Creating an optimal sleep environment is key to helping you fall asleep faster and staying asleep throughout the night. Try to keep your bedroom temperature between 15°C and 20°C to prevent you overheating or getting too cold during the night. A clean, tidy space with neutral colours can help you relax and sets a more restful mood. And of course, a quality mattress and pillow that you love can improve the quality of your sleep, eliminate pain points in your body, improve hygiene and help manage allergies.

Question: Can you tell us about SleepX?

Tony Taylor: SleepX is an Australian bedding company committed to delivering the goods on value, comfort and quality. Focusing on choice and convenience, we offer premium bed-in-a-box mattresses to suit a variety of comfort needs. SleepX also offers therapy pillows and mattress toppers to help everyone get the sleep they deserve.

Question: What is SleepX currently developing?

Tony Taylor: We're always working on new products or on ways of improving our current range! I can't tell you too much just yet, but we've been doing lots of laying down on the job to test new products!
