Samantha Jade Interview

Australia's own pop starlet Samantha Jade keeps on rising with her track, I Need You Now, included on music legend David Guetta's fourth studio album; One Love. Samantha Jade, whose own smash hit single Secret has also been released, is the only Australian artist to feature on Guetta's album, among the likes of The Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Kelly Rowland and Ne-Yo.

Interview with Samantha Jade

Question: How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?

Samantha Jade: Amazing! It doesn't matter how many times you hear the song when you are recording it and producing it when you hear it on air it is like hearing it again for the first time.


Question: Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Samantha Jade: I always knew it would be a long journey, there are so many talented people out there looking for that lucky break but I stay focused and work hard and it is rewarding to finally release my first single, Secret.


Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Samantha Jade: Yes, I have written or co-written the entire album, I also write for other people such as JoJo and Ashley Tisdale. I often come up with concepts that are related to either myself or friends or sometimes the song starts with a simple idea and grows from there.


Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Samantha Jade: So many! I love the old Motown artists, I'm a big Michael Jackson fan and I love the powerhouse vocalists like Christina and Mariah. I often listen to a lot of new artists, currently I really like Pixie Lott.


Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Samantha Jade: All of the above! We are finalising the second single and album at the moment, I am going back to LA to shoot the next video clip shortly and then will be back in Australia to do some shows.


Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Samantha Jade: I have never really thought of throwing in the towel, it was certainly tough at times being with Jive Records and seeing all their top artists like Britney and Justin Timberlake being released and having to wait for my turn but I wasn't prepared to sit back and say ok it's coming soon, I wanted to get my music out there which is why we have come back to Australia to launch, I had always wanted to release in my home country first.


Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Samantha Jade: I love performing live but I have been really lucky to work with some of the best producers in the world like Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Max Martin and Wyclef so recording is always really great too especially when you write the songs and are a part of the entire process from start to finish, that is very rewarding.


Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Samantha Jade: My family, we have quite a musical background and I loved singing from a young age. They have always been so supportive of me and John Harris, my manager who first signed me when I was 15, he has such huge belief in me as an artist and his passion is very inspiring.


Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Samantha Jade: Being an independent artist is definitely a lot more challenging than being signed to a major, we have an awesome team and it is so much more rewarding when we get the wins because we have had to work so much harder for them!


Question: What's a typical day like?

Samantha Jade: Very busy! Usually I am writing and recording in the studio or if we have a record out then I am on the road doing a lot of meetings, interviews, performances and appearances.


Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Samantha Jade: Definitely the people I have met along the way.


Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Samantha Jade: So many! As far as Australian artists go I would love to do a song with Guy Sebastian, he is such a talented singer.


Question: Are you single? What do you look for in a partner?

Samantha Jade: Yes! I like guys that are fun to be around and make me laugh.
